Sony Financial Results for April-June 2009 (Fiscal Q1 2009)

Full results here

Overall, company-wide (mostly non-gaming) results were bad. Compared with the same quarter last year, revenue was down 19.2%, and the company went from generating a ¥73.4 billion yen operating profit to a ¥25.7 billion yen operating loss.

For the gaming results, the first thing you notice is they reorganized the company’s divisions and gaming is no longer a separate division and is much harder to separate out.

Category April-June 2008 (millions) April-June 2009 (millions) Year over Year Change
PS2 HW 1.5 1.6 6.67%
PSP HW 3.7 1.3 -64.86%
PS3 HW 1.6 1.1 -31.25%
PS2 SW 19.3 8.5 -55.96%
PSP SW 11.8 8.3 -29.66%
PS3 SW 22.8 14.8 -35.09%
  • Whole world economy is down. It is fair to judge Sony’s performance relative to other consumer electronics and game makers.
  • April-June of 2008 was a hot quarter for software PS3 had several of their biggest-ever games ship in that quarter: GTA 4, GT5 Prologue, and Metal Gear Solid 4. For April-June 2009, they shipped Infamous and had a few OK cross-platform titles (Prototype, Red Faction, UFC) but clearly April-June 2008 was an unusually hot quarter for software by any standard.
  • Japanese currency has appreciated, the dog ate my homework, etc. Seriously, an appreciated currency is bad Japanese export makers like Sony, but great for Japanese consumers. Still, if the company was selling more units rather than fewer units, they wouldn’t have to dwell on these things.
  • Results are still disappointing. Even with all the above qualifiers, these results are still disappointing. Sony shipped the best games for the first half of 2009, and it doesn’t seem to have much of an impact. These results aren’t disastorous, but they are disappointing.

Fable 2 Video Diary Ep. 4: World Design

Fable 2 is still being molded up at Lionhead Studio’s and what better way to remind all of us that it still exist than a video diary. This one is about world design. If only Peter Molyneux’s trance inducing voice could guarantee that he and his team won’t bite more than they can chew this time around. Check out the video after the break or head on over to for this video and/or the first three if you haven’t already seen them.

The Pac-man World Championship Final Round in all of its pellet eating glory

Pac-man tournaments are dime a dozen now a days. OK, I’m lying, but they sure seem like they are when it comes to the Pac-man fever that the Xbox team up in Redmond were in for what seemed like an eternity. Now that the Pac-man World Championships are over and have become apart of history, there’s only one thing to do. Reminisce of course.

Courtesy of Destructoid, comes this video of titanic proportions. Showcasing the battle to the death between Austria’s Robert “The Glashinator” Glashuettner and Mexico’s own Carlos “John” Romero. Falling short of coming up with anymore adjectives to describe this event, enjoy the intense action. Anyway you look at it, I fail to drum up the intrigue and speculation that Microsoft’s “Bigg” Announcements can produce, so I’ll let you down with more Pac-man.

Pinata World record beaten by Mexican Goverment

As if the Mexican Government didn’t have anything else to do, they have defeated the world record set by Microsoft with there very own gigantic pinata. The Mexican Pinata is 27 meter’s tall, compared to only 14.6 meters for the Microsoft attempt. Pictured on the top is the Mexican monstrosity. On the bottom is the Microsoft attempt . Nice to know pinatas are getting the love from somebody.

Halo 3 Trailer(Mad World Version)

Don’t act all surprised like you didn’t know this was going to happen. Click the above video to see how the Halo 3 trailer is mixed with the Gears of War AD sob song.

Oh and why does this song seem to fit anything its put with?? Just for kicks I would love for someone to make a video of them eating a sandwich while “Mad World” plays in the backround. Will it still have the same emotional effect? Nope, but it would be funny.

Xbox 360 passes 8 million sold worldwide

According to Nexgenwars, the Xbox 360 has sold over 8 million consoles worldwide. Just shy of the 10 million sold by the end of the year goal announced by Microsoft. Whether or not we can trust the numbers by Nexgenwars is at question also. Will they make it or will the warm reception of the Wii impact there potential sales?

One thing is certain, jumping through hoops or waiting in a line for endless hours to get a PlayStation 3 or a Wii isn’t what the average consumer is willing to do for a video game machine when they see that shiny white 360 display staring them in the face with an established library. After it’s all said and done availability not Gears of War will ultimately be the killer app.
