More girls becoming gamers according to the NPD

Source: videogamesblogger.com

Girls Playing Video GamesA study by the NPD Group on young girls called “Girl Power: Understanding This Important Consumer Segment”, which examines how girls ages 2 to 14 years old spend their time in a typical week, has found that this group are increasingly spending more of their time playing PC and video games.

Girls ages 2-5 still spend the majority of their time with toys and dolls, but as they reach 6 to 8 years old they start becoming interested in board games and “virtual worlds”. By the time they reach 9-12 traditional toys are still their primary activity, but the NPD has found that these tweens start migrating to computer and video games, especially virtual online worlds.”

“Socialization is gearing up among the pre-teens, and the advent of interactive gaming really hits home with these girls who are looking for friends from the confines of their homes,” NPD explains. “Young Teens (age 13-14) are also gamers, but many girls this age are also now listening to music on portable digital music players and talking/texting on their mobile phones.”

“Some very traditional play patterns still are the most popular among girls, even in this digital age,” said Anita Frazier, NPD’s industry analyst. “Over 50 percent of girls ages 2-14 engage with dolls, plush, and arts & crafts in a given week which is a testament to the evergreen nature of these types of activities for girls.”

“Girls, in general, are famously social creatures,” continued Frazier. “The growth in use of social networking and virtual world websites by girls is a natural extension of this core value which needs to be recognized by manufacturers who count girls as primary market for their goods and services.”

During these tough economic times people flock to videogames

Source: videogamesblogger.com

Girl and Guy Play Video GamesVideo games have become the new comfort food of the modern age. Where it used to be movies and theaters it is now electronic entertainment, and the dominant form of that is video games.

NPR has a very interesting article discussing the issue, where they talk about entertainment from the Great Depression era all the way until nowadays. Here are some interesting nuggets:

* In the 1930s, Americans flocked to theaters for the cost of a nickel, where they got to see everything from melodramas, to romances, to films bursting with song and dance. For that nickel you saw two features, or sometimes two features and a news reel. And during the Depression, you got two features, a news reel and a raffle for Depression-ware china.

* Turn to 2008, and movie revenues are only up slightly, while the number of tickets sold has remained fairly consistent throughout the past decade.

* In comparison, video game sales in 2008 were up 43% from the same time in 2007 as of September 26th.

* David Riley of the NPD Group believes the reason video games are outperforming movies is due to “more bang for your buck”, movies a couple of hours, while video games give can give you anywhere from 15 to 100 hours of entertainment depending on the title.

I know for me personally, I always feel like watching TV and movies is a “waste of time” in the sense that I could be using the same amount of time to make a few hours of progress in whatever video games I’m currently playing. And I think that’s the biggest aspect of video games that separates it from passive entertainment like movies and television shows, you don’t have the same feeling of accomplishment that you get from a video game (you don’t gain any Achievements or unlock additional content by finishing a season of Smallville).

Not only that, but you also don’t have the same sense of “making progress” that you do in a video game, where you are actually “doing” something and working towards a goal, whether it’s kills in multiplayer, collecting furniture in Animal Crossing, defeating a boss or completing a chapter, all modern video games have some type of goal or way for the player to make progress and get further. And as mentioned above, video games also REWARD you for what you are doing, and I think that is one of their biggest draws.

I personally was never one who played video games to “escape”. Matter of fact, i wouldn’t even say I play them to relax (If I want to relax I’ll lay down and do nothing, listen to music or read a book); rather, I’ve always played video games simply to have fun, as something to do. And I think during hard times, video games are now more than ever the most attractive form of entertainment. As you can be rewarded, make progress, have fun, socialize, interact with others, achieve and feel every range of various human emotions through this form of entertainment. And it lasts much longer than any other form of entertainment. Which only makes the world a better place if you ask me.

It has been revealed that IGolf and IBowl for Apple’s iPhone have sold a phenomenal 2 million copies since they’re release on the App Store, which debuted on July 11th for iPhone and iPod Touch.

Thanks to that success, the game’s developer, SGN, has also released their newest game, iBaseball. Reports techcrunch.

All of the game’s from the publisher are free to download, and they use the accelerometer in your iPhone to control gameplay, allow you to make motions to throw or bat, for example, much like games for the Nintendo Wii. iBaseball includes applause and sound effects, vibration for when a hit is made and even supports left-handed gameplay. You can also challenge a friend to play, but only by taking turns. However direct head-to-head play will be coming soon as announced by CEO Shervin Pishevar, who also announced that more games from the developer are inevitable (that goes without saying).

The App Store has been a tremendous success so far. There are over 700 iPhone games and applications on the App Store and include some big names that are either already released or in development, including Super Monkey Ball Iphone (which has sold over 300,000 copies), Star Wars The Force Unleashed, Spore Origins, Need for Speed Undercover, Wolfenstein RPG and Doom RPG2, Real Soccer 2009, Bomberman, Peggle, Sonic the Hedgehog, Tetris, The Sims: DJ, The Sims: Bowling, The Sims: Pool, Bejeweled and many, many more.

Who of the Presidential Election Candidates are pro gamers?

Source: videogamesblogger.com

Sarah Palin playing a flightsim videogame

As videogamers go to the polls for the U.S. Presidential Election on November 4th, it is important that gamers have information on where the Presidential Candidates: John McCain and Barack Obama, and their Vice Presidential running-mates: Sarah Palin and Joe Biden, stand on the issues relating to their favorite or preferred hobby.

Hillary Clinton likely would regular videogamesIt is very clear though that Hillary Clinton was the most anti-gaming of the bunch. She had tired many times (and failed on each) to attempt to regulate the gaming industry and frequently called on investigations into the video game industry and/or companies related to it, such as during the Hot Coffee Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas scandal. This leaves no doubt that a Clinton Presidency would’ve challenged the status quo regarding video games and the federal government.

But since she didn’t win the Democratic Nomination, let’s segue into the first woman who may become Vice President and the talk of the town ever since her “lipstick” comment at the Republican National Convention: Governor and Republican Vice Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin.

Sarah Palin NOT talking about videogames at the RNCAs you can see above, there is actually photographic evidence that she has at least touched what one could consider a “videogame” at some time in her life. However, it looks complicated even to me! So what about videogames the rest of us play? Well given the newness of the Governor on the national stage, not much is known about her stance regarding video games. However she was once involved in a book censorship scandal as the Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska in 1996 that involved the firing (and then re-hiring after public backlash) of a librarian who resisted a book ban.

She has since gone on record saying that her talks of censorship were “rhetorical”, whatever that means. But as it stands, there is not enough information either way to say whether she would be good or bad for the videogame industry. However since Republicans are generally against government involvement that bolds well as that is the stance John McCain has.

John McCain wearing a U.S. Navy capAs for specifically where the Republican Presidential Candidate John McCain stands on videogame regulation, there is a report from the Summer of 2008 New Hampshire town hall meeting in which McCain is paraphrased as saying that it should fall on the parents to be responsible in choosing which videogames their kids can play (i.e., not the government) and that it should happen on a case-by-case basis. The report then says though that he used the question to segue into a discussion on child pornography, which obviously is a much bigger issue. But his hesitation to regulate the video game industry via the federal government matches up with the traditional Republican belief in “small government”, that is, the government shouldn’t be involved in these affairs. As mentioned above.

It also may be of note to gamers that the McCain campaign actually posted a flash-based game called “Pork Invaders” on their Facebook page. It’s a Space Invaders clone in which you must blast away “pork-barrel-spending” and it’s meant to help introduce young voters to McCain’s desire to cut government spending and veto pork-barrel projects that will reach his desk when he is President.

McCain, and Obama, are both against levying additional taxes on the Internet. McCain is also, however, against federally regulated net neutrality, which his official website states is an “unnecessary government intrusion.” This represents a critical difference between McCain and Obama. McCain’s campaign also says that he will support efforts to crack down on the “global epidemic of piracy. McCain also advocates expanding broadband penetration into communities that currently lack the service, a stance he shares with his opponent Barack Obama.

Wonder if John McCain's daughter Meghan is a gamer? One thing is for sure though, John McCain’s daughter Meghan McCain is much more likely to be a gamer. She is very tech-savvy as you can tell by Meghan McCain’s blog in which she posts pictures and videos as well blogs about her daily life. In fact the heading on her blog says, “Musings and Pop Culture on the Political Trail” so if John McCain is elected, at least he has a modern tech-savvy daughter who may be able to clear some things up for him.

And now turn to John McCain’s opponent and the Democratic Presidential Candidate, Barack Obama.

Obama has spoken the most about video games out of the two candidates and their VP’s and has stated publicly that he loves Pong. Unfortunately, any love for video games ends there, with that ancient (but fun) title. Even though it is pretty rare for a politician to show ANY kind of love for a video game.

Barack Obama with American flag

However Obama has shown that he doesn’t have much respect for the video game medium as he has spoken against it on numerous occasions. The most famous of which being on February of 2007 during a speech in Austin, Texas where he implored young people to “turn off the TV and stop playing Game Boy because we’ve got work to do.” And in 2006, for reasons unknown, Obama returned a $500 campaign contribution from then-President of the ESA Doug Lowenstein.

But as far as an official stance on the federal regulation of video games, Obama spoke to Common Sense Media in late 2007 where he expressed his belief that the video game industry as the opportunity to regulate itself via better informational campaigns and tools for parents. But he said if the industry doesn’t take the opportunity and responsibility to improve the system, then his administration would definitely step-in to do something about it. In the same interview, Barack Obama stated that he would back a federal study to examine the effect of videogames on the cognitive development of children (I assume they mean violent games and not Viva Pinata).

According to the Obama campaign’s official stance, Obama is against levying additional taxes on the Internet. He is also the politician at the forefront of supporting federally mandated net neutrality—such laws would keep the Internet from becoming a tiered service where only certain content (from content providers willing to pay an additional fee) would be delivered at maximum throughput. These two issues could have a significant effect on the future of digital distribution, particularly for smaller, independent distributors. The senator is also strongly in favor of rigorously protecting intellectual property rights and redefining the FCC standard of “broadband” to a higher minimum bandwidth.

An official picture of Obama's VP Joe BidenFinally we come to Barack Obama’s Vice Presidential running mate, Joe Biden. However there isn’t much to see here, as he does not have a significant history with videogame-related issues. However he is notorious for being anti-consumer on issues of technology. He has been vague on net neutrality in the past, and fought vigorously for the intellectual property concerns of the RIAA and the MPAA.

Source: videogamesblogger.com

PAX - Penny Arcade Expo logo

The Penny Arcade Expo 2008 (PAX 2008) is about to begin and will be running all weekend, from August 29th to August 31st.

The PAX expo has really grown by leaps and bounds the past few years and this year promises to be even bigger than last. In some ways the show is on track to become as important an annual convention as E3 was.

And that means that lots and lots of games will be on display and playable to anyone at the show, which is open to the public. And many of those games will be making their first public appearance.

Here is the list of what Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft are showing at PAX 2008.

Microsoft

1. Gears of War 2

2. Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise

3. Project Origin

4. Castle Crashers (XBLA)

5. LEGO Batman

6. Fable 2

7. Infinite Undiscovery

8. Little Gamers (XBLA)

9. JellyCar (XBLA)

Sony

1. LittleBigPlanet (PS3)

2. Resistance 2 (PS3)

3. Resistance: Retribution (PSP)

4. SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation (PS3)

5. MotorStorm: Pacific Rift (PS3)

6. The Last Guy (PSN)

7. Wipeout HD (PSN)

8. Crash Commando (PSN)

9. Savage Moon (PSN)

10. Rag Doll Kungfu: Fists of Plastic (PSN)

Nintendo

1. Kirby Super Star Ultra (DS)

2. Rhythm Heaven (DS)

3. Wii Music (Wii)

4. Shaun White Snowboarding (Wii)

5. Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood(DS)

6. Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir (DS)

7.Star Wars The Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels (Wii)

8. Star Wars The Clone Wars: Jedi Alliance (DS)

9. Chrono Trigger (DS)

10. Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia (DS)

11. Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen (DS)

12. Skate it (Wii)

13. WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2009

14. The Conduit (Wii)

15. Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World (Wii)

Thirty four titles total. Not bad. Not bad at all. It’s interesting to see Nintendo with the largest line-up of games. Quite surprising if you ask me but definitely kudos to them for taking advantage of Penny Arcade to show their wares.

Good bye video games, hello videogames!

Since videogames isn’t officially listed in any dictionary or the Microsoft Style Guide that Word uses. These two guys are on a mission to start spelling video games as one word.
