Street Fighter IV is Capcom’s upcoming fighting opus that seeks to return Street Fighter to it’s glorious roots while updating the beast to modern-day at the same time. No small feat.
And now the game finally has an official release date. Street Fighter 4 will be released in North America for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on Tuesday, February 17th, 2009 and in Europe three days later on Friday, February 20th, 2009.
Here is a new trailer introducing Gouken, the martial arts master who trained Ken and Ryu and has been mentioned in several of the game’s dating back to the original Street Fighter II. And now, finally, he makes his full fledged debut in Street Fighter IV.
SEGA vs Capcom, does that sound like a good idea to you?
Well Capcom was asked about the likelihood of creating a SEGA vs Capcom game as reported by Nintendo Everything and offered this comment in reply:
“One never knows. We have a lot on our plates at the moment with Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Street Fighter 4 and Tatsunoko vs Capcom on the fighting front. We’ll see what happens down the line.” – Christian Svensson, Corporate Officer/VP of Strategic Planning & Business Development
Ok that’s about as generic an answer as they come and doesn’t answer the question but it is interesting that they seem open to ideas. Personally I still hope that we see a Street Fighter vs Mortal Kombat game, THAT would be interesting.
Out of the complete Street Fighter 4 cast, 19 characters have been revealed like Ken and Crimson Viper. Producer Yoshinori Ono (who also did Street Fighter III 3rd Strike: Fight for the Future) has said that the character roster “isn’t finalised yet, but we’re trying to use all the characters from Street Fighter II’ Turbo, and we’re obviously cooking up new characters as well.”
We thought it was time to list the Street Fighter 4 characters below that have been confirmed for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC versions of the fighting game (with online multiplayer) that will be released in winter 2008 and in Arcades in July 2008.
When you click on each Street Fighter 4 character’s name below, a window will pop up with a picture of him / her.
Still missing from the Street Fighter II’ Turbo cast or hinted at characters are:
* Cammy White
* Dee Jay
* Ibuki
* Sakura Kasugano
* T. Hawk
* Akuma (AKA Gouki) was confirmed by Capcom to not be in the game.
Even if those or some of your other past favorites do not return at the time of release, they might still appear later on. How? Mr. Ono is also looking into the possibility of using microtransactions for future downloadable content updates which might include new characters and stages, but that’s ultimately up to Capcom.
Watch parts of various matches between the Street Fighter 4 characters that show off the game’s art style:
Street Fighter 4’s “2D” six-button gameplay will have new special moves, including Focus attacks, Super Combos, and the revenged-fueled Ultra Combo system.

PS: We’ll update this list when more characters get confirmed.
We’ve been covering Street Fighter 4 since it was first announced and we were pretty banking that it was coming to Xbox 360. Capcom officially came out and said that SF 4 is coming to Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. No release date was announced but rumor is Winter this year.
Abel is an all-new character for Street Fighter IV, just revealed at the Japanese arcade show AOU 08 in both pic and video form!.
Abel doesn’t look too far removed from the kind of Ken/Ryu type character we know and love, and he’s certainly a built guy. Abel is described as “a man without a past,” and has gathered what little clues he can as he searches for remaining members of Shadoloo. As his tag line suggests, he has a terrible case of amnesia.
Ahhh amnesia, is there any better kind of plot device?
Sarcasm aside, all the characters announced so far (including the original SFII cast and newcomers to Street Fighter IV Crimson Viper and Abel) will be playable in the game’s demo build this Saturday at the AOU Amusement Expo!
And videos of the new characters in action from the show have already hit the Internets! But first check out these up-close pics of Abel.
Now check out some videos of Street Fighter IV in action, including Abel, Chun-Li, E-Honda and Crimson Viper!
Not to be confused with Abel from you know The Bible, IGN has posted some pictures of a new character named “Abel” from Street Fighter 4.
Judging from this and other screenshots he reminds me of a light skinned Balrog. His style seems that of a Boxer/brawler and he at the moment seems to be handing Guile his ass on a plate.
The latest issue of Japanese games magazine Famitsu has unveiled the first of the new female characters in Street Fighter IV that the fighting game’s Producer Yoshinori Ono talked about in an interview. Sadly the scan from Neogaf is a bit blurry, but what could be translated is her name: Crimson Viper.
In order to get a Street Fighter IV video scoop, 1UP traveled to Capcom Headquarters in Japan to interview Producer Yoshinori Ono. The editors also talk about the trip and provide hands-on gameplay impressions, they even mention online multiplayer might include worldwide tournaments and rankings, as well as the possibility of downloadable content in the shape for additional characters and stages. Although not confirmed, the game is expected to appear in Arcades and on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii.
