Motion controls in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will be the hot ticket to get the Wii version over the Xbox 360 & PS3 versions that feature more physics-based action. The good news is that according to a hands-on of the by IGN the Wii version “is extremely tight and reliable, and actually some of the best we’ve seen for any Wii action game. Swipes from left to right, right to left, vertical upper-cuts and slams, and even stab motions worked extremely well – nearly 100% of the time – and even dual-handed motion such as the huge fore maelstrom or complicated push + lighting variations worked almost flawlessly. Force Unleashed was fun last time around, but it was a total waggle-fest. This time, we were able to actually decide exactly how to dispose of enemies, and it was extremely rewarding. It was easy to throw characters into one another, lift a baddy up into the air and then saber throw, the lock-on camera worked great for bosses, and even the “tilt to the side” block with the Wii-mote worked every time we wanted it to. Force Unleashed had potential before, but it’s a blast to play now.”

LucasArts has announced The Star Wars: The Force Unleashed release date in America is September 16th, in Australia it’s September 17th, and in Europe it’s September 19th, 2008, on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PlayStation 2, PSP and DS.
With it being a multiplatform game, people who own more than one console might have a hard time deciding which version to pick. That’s why LucasArts has released another web documentary highlighting the differences between the platforms. Naturally Star Wars lightsaber fans will go with the Wii motion-controlled version, while the Xbox 360 & PlayStation 3 versions will look graphically superior and include the best force-physics. Portable gamers might enjoy the classic missions on the PSP that put you in scenes out of the entire Star Wars saga instead of following the Darth Vader’s secret apprentice game plot, or maybe you prefer the DS touch screen stylus controls.
In the following video the developers don’t show the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions because those were covered in previous The Force Unleashed development documentaries.

The Star Wars: The Force Unleashed details an expansive story, created by LucasArts under direction from George Lucas, is set during the largely unexplored era between Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. We’ve gone into some detail before on the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Unleashed game from LucasArts, now there are some new details from CES 2008. Most notably are the effects in the Xbox 360 & PS3 versions being talked about first, and then the different Wii and PSP versions.
* The game is fast and mean; the force powers do some crazy things, and the play is impacted by the physics in amazing ways. You try to pick up a StormTrooper and he grabs onto a crate while screaming. You yank up on him with the Force again, and both the ‘Trooper and the crate fly into the air. The force powers and the physics get even crazier; if you force push a metal door, it twists and deforms realistically.
* Boss battles will be huge in scope, including a Rancor fight. There will be God of War-like button-tapping sections at the end of the battle, but it will only be for more points; you won’t lose a battle by missing a button press.
* There will be character and lightsaber customization, although you won’t be able to dual-wield or have dual-bladed lightsabers.
* The Wii version of the game will include a two-player duel mode where you can show off your lightsaber skills against a friend in the same room.
* The PSP version will contain classic scenes from other Star Wars movies with the more over-the-top force powers of Unleashed.
Arstechnica also mentions the multiplatform game is currently in alpha and planned for a summer 2008 release.
