Uncharted 2 Release Date Oct. 13th!

Hang on, Nathan Drake! Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is almost here, with Sony confirming to us today that the Naughty Dog developed PlayStation 3 game will arrive in the U.S. on October 13th. Start planning your sick days/pre-orders accordingly.

Sony also released Uncharted 2’s final box art, reminding us of Mr. Drake’s expert ability to hang from ledges and platforms with just one hand. Combine that with his expertise at maintaining a shirt that’s half-tucked, half-not and you’ll see why the stubbly treasure hunter’s adventures warranted a sequel.

Oh, and speaking of pre-orders, Sony laid out its retailer plans for a quartet of downloadable exclusives with, GameStop, Game Crazy and BestBuy. Golden guns, right after this. Full Story

Yes, those are the golden Barettas that Drake can wield in multiplayer, adding a bit of flash to your online death match and “Plunder” competition. They’re exclusive to BestBuy, meaning that if you’re into sporting golden AK-47s, that should be your pre-order retailer of choice.

Here is the pre-order break down- – Exclusive UNCHARTED 2 Treasure Map
The exclusive UNCHARTED 2 Treasure Map allows players to discover hidden treasures throughout the game.

Game Crazy – Exclusive Currency Multiplier for multiplayer online use
The UNCHARTED 2 Currency Multiplier allows gamers to gain in-game currency and unlock bonuses faster than their opponents for a limited period.

GameStop – Exclusive first access to the Multiplayer Demo and the downloadable Revenge Attribute
The Revenge Attribute is one of the last boosters that you can unlock in the multiplayer campaign. This bonus allows you to unlock the “Revenge” booster right from the start of your multiplayer campaign.

Why no Valve games on PS3?

Valve’s Tom Leonard explains why there have been no Valve games on PS3 since The Orange Box;

The PC and the 360 are just more straightforward. We can focus on what we want to do, which is make game experiences, instead of sweating bullets over obscure architectural decisions they make with their platform. [...] I didn’t come into this business in the 90s because of some technical fetish. I came in because I wanted to give people experiences that made them have fun.

So is the PS3’s architecture is too complicated to program for? Yes but with the quality titles like uncharted and Killzone 2 on the platform is obvious it can produce quality results. This strikes me more that the developers are too lazy to learn it rather than it being too difficult for them to handle. Valve are a hugely talented company and I just wish they would put the effort into porting their games to PS3. Maybe it isn’t profitable for them as they are not the biggest company out there but surely the PS3 audience is big enough to warrant the risk? Either way as a PS3 and Mac owner this really leaves me in the dark in terms of being able to play any future Valve titles let alone Left 4 Dead.

Sony’s FAQ About Firmware 2.40

Sony have put an FAQ up on their official blog answering questions that were raised by the two firmware videos. Here’s a taster of some of the questions:

Q: Will voice-messaging/private chat be featured in 2.40 as well? If not, can we expect to see this feature added in the future?

A: We are evaluating the opportunity to offer voice chat, but for this update, we wanted to focus on text messaging as the key priority for communications that our users have asked for.

Q: Can you use the web browser in game?

A: No, you must exit the game before browsing the internet.

Q: Will In-Game XMB come up during playback of PS2 games, Blu-Ray discs, and DVDs?

A:The XMB is an exclusive feature for PS3 game titles. Accessing the XMB during gameplay was the top request from our users, which we focused on for this update. However, we continually engage PS3 owners for feedback and will evaluate the opportunity to offer XMB access during movie playback in the future.

Q: Can we go to the display settings and change anything there in-game (resolution, input, etc)?

A: No, you must exit the game before changing these settings.

Q: Will it be possible to change in-game the sound output?

A: Yes, sound output changes are supported.

Video of Firmware 2.40 Coming Tonight?

Jeff Rubenstein had this to say on Sony’s PlayStation.Blog:

But because I know what you’re going to ask about, and because we don’t traffic in rumors and/or speculation, I invite you to come back to the Blog tonight (just shy of midnight Pacific). We’ve got a video to show you.

Could it be the video walkthrough of the long awaited Firmware 2.40?

I say yes, yes it is (hopefully )!!

Life with PlayStation

It is basically a interactive globe. You can view current news and weather for places all over the world. Listen to your own music stored on the PS3. I would personally use this from time to time. I hope you can set up certain locations that pull up by default when it launches.

From the rough translation on the site. It seems that the globe will actually display live clouds as the weather changes. More photos at the link below.

Memory game played using Eye Tracking (PC)

To prevent whole generations of computer users with mouse arms, I imagine that eye tracking and voice control in combination with big touch screens for additional interactivity are the future. But for now we’re seeing the early beginnings with eye tracking used to control basic tasks on the desktop. Watch Martin Tall’s (cognitive science) demo that shows how to play a memory game simply by looking at the screen!
