The King of Fighters 98 Ultimate Match coming to PS2 and XBLA in 2009

Source: videogamesblogger.com

King of Fighters 98 Ultimate Match soundtrack coverA King of Fighters ‘98 remake titled The King of Fighters ‘98 Ultimate Match was released in Japanese arcades back in March 2008. This was later followed by a retail PlayStation 2 release in Japan in June 2008, which SNK Playmore promises will come to America sometime in 2009.

But that’s not the only way you’ll be able to play the versus fighting game, as a Tokyo Game Show 2008 games list showed King of Fighters 98 Ultimate Match will be coming to Xbox Live Arcade in 2009! According to Siliconera this remake of the King of Fighters ‘98 has a healthy dose of 10 extra characters (now 64 total), cleans up the graphics and includes balance changes for top tier players. It’s also expect that the Xbox 360 release will be modified for online play through Xbox LIVE, much like the recent remake release of SNK’s Samurai Shodown II on Xbox Live Arcade. More details about the new features will be unveiled at the Tokyo Game Show 2008 expo that starts on October 9th.

You’d think for a 10-year-anniversary they’d release the remake worldwide in 2008, but then again, getting it a bit later outside of Japan beats not getting it at all.

Review: SNK Arcade Classics Vol 1

Source: infendo.com

SNK Arcade Collection Vol 1The important thing I needed to remember while playing the titles in the SNK Arcade Classics Vol 1 collection is that they were first and foremost arcade games.  The fighting games are purely quick brawls, the adventuresome titles are very short in length, and the sports titles are fairly simple in their controls.  That said, I had a great time playing a group of NEOGEO games I had never experienced before.  Unfortunately, the menu system is a bit clunky since it didn’t seem to recognize the Classic Controller automatically (like pretty much every Wii game).  I didn’t think the medal achievement system would be that interesting to me, but it was always neat to see a medal show up at the bottom of the screen when you accomplished something.  It’s also nice for some games (like Metal Slug) that the system would automatically set resume points for you to come back and play after you die.  It sure was fun to play some of these games and the $30 price tag is definitely worth it for some games like Shock Troopers, Metal Slug, and World Heroes.  (Of note, you can find this same collection online at a price of $15 for the PS2 version.)   It’s a great treat when you have a friend to play these games; highly suggested if you and a room mate want to spend a night blasting bad guys in multiplayer.  Read on past the break for my take on each title.
Sengoku
Easily the trippiest of all the games in this collection.  There were some bizarre bosses and quirky power-ups.  Fun game, if for any reason but the randomness of it all.

Baseball Stars 2
Very arcadey with funny animations and power up ability when batting.  Good for a laugh for nine innings.

World Heroes (Unlockable)
This was my favorite of the many fighting games featured in the collection.

Magician Lord
You’re a wizard who can transform into a variety of characters like a ninja, dragon warrior, samurai, etc.  Not a bad title in its day as a NEOGEO launch title, but didn’t hold my attention for long.

Fatal Fury
One of many fighting based games in this collection.

The King of Fighters ‘94
My favorite fighter game has always been Street Fighter II.  The fighting games from SNK seem to take a less is more approach where you might not make as many hits, but when you do they count.  More tactical than the usual button mashers.  The neat aspect of this game was the three-character teams.

Art of Fighting
Same comments apply to this games as do the other fighting games.

King of the Monsters
This one was a bit different than the other fighters.  I’m always a fan of giant monster movies and this one didn’t disappoint.

Last Resort
This one was a surprise since it’s completely unlike all the other games.  It’s a side-scrolling shooter, sort of like R-Type.  Seemed pretty tough to me in the early levels, so I backed off since I’ve played plenty of other more interesting shooters.

Metal Slug
I had never played any Metal Slug games before, but now I’m a fan.  This game was the first one I played in this collection and was easily my favorite.  Having an endless supply of virtual quarters made it easy for me to keep blasting away until I defeated the final boss.

Neo Turf Masters
I guess before Golden Tee, this is how you’d play golf in an arcade.  Not bad and the character art is actually rather funny.

Samurai Showdown
Another fighter and I can see why it’s a big cult hit.

Burning Fight
Fairly similar to Double Dragon, but presented with quite a bit of graphical polish.

Shock Troopers
The other game that I really enjoyed.  This one is awesome and is sadly unavailable on Virtual Console (so far).  You get the option to play as a single character or as a team of three.  The characters all have unique and humorous traits.  I quickly blasted through this game in a little over an hour and I would definitely play it again.

Super Sidekicks 3
Arcade soccer that really didn’t work for me.

Top Hunter: Roddy & Cathy
Another side scrolling adventure fighter.  You have to jump from one path to another which is a weird game mechanic, but made for some interesting fighting tactics.  Not bad, but I grew tired of it quickly.

Overall score for the collection:  Three out of four stars

Metal Slug Anthology for Wii puts all previous 7 games on 1 discPublisher Ignition Entertainment announced that they have come to a co-publishing agreement with SNK-Playmore for North America. Ignition Entertainment and SNK have been working strongly together in Europe in recent years, for example by releasing Metal Slug Anthology in the region, and with the resurgence of Ignition Entertainment in the US, the two have joined forces once again.

Metal Slug 7 DS screenshotThe first of the titles to be jointly published under the new partnership in America will be Metal Slug 7 for Nintendo DS. The Metal Slug series has found its home on multiple platforms since its debut in 1996, and Metal Slug 7 is the first installment to be developed exclusively for Nintendo DS without an Arcade version. The run and gun platform-shooter will be out in Japan sometime in 2008, but no release date was announced for the English version.

New Samurai Spirits Sen gameplay videos

Source: videogamesblogger.com

Samurai Spirits Sen AKA Samurai Shodown 7 was shown at the AOU 2008 Amusement Expo in Japan this week. Developer SNK Playmore showed off new Arcade gameplay footage to the convention visitors. While the developer seemed to have impressed fighting game fans with The King of Fighters XII at the show, Samurai Spirits Sen’s 3D look and slow/unresponsive controls left fans of the series with the feeling there was much tweaking to be done.

This isn’t the greatest look at the game, and we are sure to get some higher quality videos soon enough, but for now this will have to do!

Fatal Fury, World Heroes, Art of Fighting hit the Wii Virtual Console today

Source: videogamesblogger.com

Get a Wii Points Card at AmazonToday Nintendo adds three new classic games to the popular Wii Shop Channel. The games go live at 9AM Pacific time. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at stores like Amazon (see to your right).

NEOGEO games will now be appearing in the Wii Shop Channel for download. NEOGEO becomes the sixth platform represented in the Wii Shop Channel. We’ve included videos of each game for nostalgia’s sake or so you can see if it’s for you. This week’s new games are:

Fatal Fury on NEOGEOFatal Fury (NEOGEO, 1-2 players, rated T for Teen - Violence, 900 Wii Points = $9): Released in 1991 and one of the longest-running series in the fighting-game genre, this title introduced players to Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard and Joe Higashi. Select one of the three and visit many locations as your chosen fighter engages in numerous street fights around the fictional city of South Town. If you’re good enough, you’ll eventually take on Billy Kane and then his boss, the notorious crime lord Geese Howard. Use each fighter’s own finishing maneuver and battle in two different planes on the screen, one in the foreground and the other farther away in the background. The game also features a two-player mode that is well known for its unique setup, which allows fighters to both fight and help each other. Do you have what it takes to win the King of Fighters tournament?

World Heroes World Heroes on NEOGEO(NEOGEO, 1-2 players, rated T for Teen - Animated Blood, Violence, 900 Wii Points = $9): A fighting game released in 1992 featuring eight characters, including Hanzo, Janne and Rasputin, modeled on historical figures from throughout the ages. The fighters compete against each other to become the world’s toughest combatant, with players using a setup consisting of only three buttons (one each for punching, kicking and throwing). Adding to this unique system is the fact that the strength of your offensive blow depends on how long the button is pressed and held. Along with regular match styles, Death Match mode is also available and features mines, electrified ropes and other dangerous objects in the battle arena that can change conditions during the fight or damage players. Enjoy the wide range of combat forms as you take on history’s best!

Art of Fighting on NEOGEOArt of Fighting (NEOGEO, 1-2 players, rated T for Teen - Animated Blood, Violence, 900 Wii Points = $9): This fighting game, released in 1992, began the story of the Sakazaki family and Robert Garcia, further developed in two later sequels. Yuri Sakazaki has been abducted by Mr. Big to punish her father, Takuma, and her brother, Ryo. To rescue her, Ryo and Robert must take on numerous enemies around South Town, eventually reaching the mysterious Mr. Karate. The passion of the game’s creators is evident in the unique game-play elements introduced. These include an energy gauge that is depleted every time a fighter uses a special maneuver, Desperation Attacks that are usable only when a fighter’s health is low and camera zooming that adjusts on the fly as fighters move around the stage. All these features ensure that players use strategy and tactics, rather than simply mash buttons. Adding to the mix are little touches such as characters showing cuts when they are injured and voice-over samples during cut scenes. Can you perfect the art of fighting and save Yuri?
