The Weekly Recap (July 26th – August 1st)

This week, we had very little actual news, so a lot of the submissions are based on rumors, reviews and the Mockers clan. Sorry my post is a little late today, as it’s been a pretty hectic weekend. Went up to Payson Friday evening and my mom was admitted into the hospital yesterday (her diabetes is out of control). In any case, always try to look on the bright side of things. Here’s what we had going on for the week:

Alrighty, that’s 29 entries this week. As far as the ‘Contributor of the Week’ goes, that goes to, once again, Eddie with 8 submissions. Get a life :P . Also of note, besides the QuickNews posted by Tosh on the PS3 Slim model showing up on the German Amazon, nothing was submitted for Saturday, August 1st.

Anyways, here’s hoping we get some juicy info this week, but don’t be surprised if we don’t. A lot of developers and publishers probably won’t release anything newsworthy until TGS next month. Thank you all for checking this out and all that. Remember, if you would like to see what you missed from weeks past, check out the Weekly Recap Archive.

The Weekly Recap (July 19-25)

Well, this week seemed a little slow with the news, netting in 28 submissions. Nothing truly spectacular surfaced this week, so it’s just a little dry. We did manage to find a few things though! Without further ado, here’s what we had going on this week:

Trev – July 25th

As you can see, for the most part, nothing truly amazing. We’ll probably be in this dry news spell until maybe TGS (I hope earlier than that, though, because that’s a ways away).

Also, no surprise here, Eddie has gotten ‘Contributor of the Week’ with 9 entries. Maybe I should start doing ‘Everyone but Eddie Contributor of the Week’ haha! In which case, Trev would win that with 7 submissions. I don’t have a Comment of the Week this week because I hadn’t had the time to look through all the responses and pick one. Haven’t been feeling too hot this week either…

The Weekly Recap (July 5-11)

The Weekly Recap
Since we now get a good constant flow of news pouring in daily, I’m going to try to do weekly recaps every Sunday. This one is a bit late, though, so it’s going to be about 3.5 days until I post the news from this week (new idea). I’m not going to include the QuickNews section, since that doesn’t update nearly as often, nor the store updates. I’m aware there is an ‘Archives’ section, but most people only check the front page. Anyways, here goes:

Sony Still Standing Firm on PS3 Price

Despite numerous rumors and developer backlash, Sony’s Howard Stringer is still supporting the current price tag of the PlayStation 3, saying “I (would) lose money on every PlayStation I make“. In my opinion, lowering the price would mean more product would be moved and a higher attach rate, which is good for everyone. From IGN.

Sony 2009 gaming rumors put MotorStorm and LittleBigPlanet on PSP and God of War 3

Kratos God of War 3 Screenshot

Details on a host of PlayStation 3 and PSP games have been leaked, including info on God of War 3, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Killzone 2, Motorstorm PSP and LittleBigPlanet PSP . . . and that’s not all! Numbers for the PlayStation Network were divulged as well as the news that a PS3 price cut will be coming in March of 2009.

But let’s take things one a at a time. The anonymous source who did the leak claims that he attended the Sony Computer Entertainment Staff Annual Briefing which is where he picked up all this information (man would I hate to be him right about now).

Sony naturally followed up with a statement of their own, saying: “Information discussed within the confines of internal company meetings is confidential and subject to change. We do not have anything to announce at present and we do not comment on rumor and speculation.” So all this should be taken with a grain of salt, albeit, a bigger grain given that all of this is highly plausible and could definitely be true.

According to the source, this was mostly aimed at the European market, and the President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, David Reese, discussed the harsh economic climate and detailed how they would make the PS3 “more competitive” after March (although who knows if that applies globally or just to Europe). He claimed that the PlayStation Network has generated over 150 Million pounds and that Sony will invest heavily in the PSN in 2009.

Pre-Order God of War 3 for PS3Easily the biggest news of the conference was God of War 3 info! They showed off a new trailer which was supposedly so impressive that he couldn’t tell if it was CG or in-game. “Some of it looked like it could be in-game action because of the camera angles, but it all looked so good that it couldn’t be. CGI or not, everyone was pumped up by this,” the source said. The trailer apparently shows Kratos battling skeletons and Cyclops’, riding an eagle, and then killing the eagle after dismounting from it. It ends with Kratos staring ominously up at a dark cavern that is believed to be Mount Olympus.

Corroborating this, at least in part, is the creator of God of War himself, David Jaffe. Although he no longer is involved with the series (he left Sony in 2007), he posted a new blog in which he gives his colored opinion of the game, which he was recently shown. To quote: “Dudes and dudettes, f***ing WAIT till you see the amazing graphics…just f***ing wait,” Jaffe writes. “I ain’t no fan boy but this mother f***ing game looks like nothing you’ve ever played…and you can hold me to that when this thing hits and when they start showing gameplay footage. It looks like a painting come to life — it’s THAT good looking.” David Jaffe also states that God of War III looks better than Gears of War 2! High praise indeed!

Pre-Order Killzone 2 for PS3Also shown in trailer form was the intro for Killzone 2 and a clip of what we now know to be Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, which was just CONFIRMED (which helps in corroborating the rest of this news and the fact that it is all likely true). Graphically, Uncharted 2 wasn’t as huge a leap from the first game as say, God of War 2 to God of War 3, but that’s to be expected given that they are both PS3 titles. The source apparently said, ” [Uncharted 2] Looks the same as Uncharted 1, not a bad thing.”

Finally, the source confirms that LittleBigPlanet is headed to the PSP (and has been in development for four months already) and that a PSP Motorstorm is also in the works.

Aykroyd: Atari to publish Ghostbusters in 2009

Given the secretive nature of major game announcements, you can bet someone at Atari is shouting:

“What did you do, Ray?!”

Speaking to Dallas radio station 105.3 KLLI, Dan Aykroyd revealed Tuesday the Ghostbusters video game has been picked up by Atari.

According to Kotaku, Aykroyd said the game is about “a year away” from being released.

Though the high-profile game was originally to be published by Vivendi Games, Ghostbusters fell into limbo after the company’s $18.8 billion merger with Activision Blizzard in August. Several Vivendi titles were dropped in the merger, including the big-budget Ghostbusters.

Atari has yet to confirm Aykroyd’s comments.

Sources: Nintendo privately demos Wii HD hardware

Veteran games journalist John Davidson reports today that a select group of incredibly lucky developers have seen, touched and commentated on a new hardware offering from Nintendo, unofficially dubbed “Wii HD.”

The hardware is scheduled to arrive in 2011, and is “characterized as similar to ‘the shift from Game Boy to Game Boy Advance,’ where familiar, key elements were left intact while the core hardware was made more powerful.” Reading between the lines (and the article), that means better visuals, a stronger online presence (as in DLC, WiiWare and Virtual Console, not Halo 3 multiplayer).

This isn’t to say Nintendo is suddenly abandoning its core strategy, however. While visuals may be getting a bump, sources stressed the focus of the system will remain on how people interact with it, instead of the hardware and processing power under the hood. Further supporting Davidson’s sources is the money trail. From 2003 to today, Nintendo’s research and development budget has exploded from a modest $34 million, to $370 in 2008. From 2007 to 2008 alone, the R&D spending has tripled. That’s a whole lot of spending on new Pokemon games, if this rumor proves to be incorrect.

The “new interface” and WiiWare bits are what got me all hot and bothered, not so much the HD. Thoughts?

Nintendo to reveal franchise revival this week

Gamekyo today dropped a preemptive Nintendo megaton.

The site formerly known as Jeux France reports today Nintendo will be making at least one major game announcement at its fall press conference later this week.

According to Gamekyo, the game is a revival of “an old franchise that everyone is waiting for.”

Nintendo announced this week’s press conference on Sept. 17. Nintendo officially commented that the conference’s content and announcements were still being finalized.

Fact or farce, we’ll know for sure in a few days. Nintendo’s fall press conference will be held in San Francisco on Thursday, Oct. 2.

Rumor: Next DS redesign details leaked?

Several big-name Japanese newspapers are dishing out details on Nintendo’s next redesign for the DS. Imported newspaper scans translated by NeoGAF lay it all on the table.

- Camera included
- Digital music playback feature
- Wireless connection function power up
-Allows users to wirelessly connect to “information terminals”
- Larger screen
- Will be released in Japan this year/ U.S. release is “being considered”
- Priced under 20000 Yen ($188 U.S dollars)
- New games can use camera
- Can transfer data from the Wii, or SD card.

Could this be what the upcoming Nintendo conference is all about, or are these Japanese news outlets blowing hot air again? Personally these details just don’t make sense. Wouldn’t larger screens stretch the old DS games to an ugly resolution? Another element that doesn’t seem to add up is the inclusion of a camera, and music player when majority of people already own both. What really kills this rumor is added SD card support which opens the door even wider for piracy.

You can take it, or leave it, but one thing is for sure…I smell some megatons approaching.

Sequel to The Conduit already in the works?

The best Wii game you’ve never played may already have a sequel.

During an interview with IGN, High Voltage Software’s Eric Nofsinger suggested a sequel to The Conduit, one of the most highly anticipated games of 2009, may already be in early planning and development.

“I think you guys will be happy with the publisher we’ve landed with because they’re big believers in what we’re trying to do on the Wii. … One of our main criteria (in choosing a publisher) was we still wanted to have a lot of access to the press…some of the other criteria that we definitely wanted to make sure was in the mix was having the ability to get started on the sequel right away, so that is something that we’re excited about as well.”

Nofsinger and other High Voltage members also discussed the game’s publisher situation, their hardcore focus on Wii and more. Listen to the full interview on the latest IGN Nintendo podcast.

The Conduit is still without a publisher, though High Voltage has indicated an announcement will be made in the coming month.
