PlayStation Home gets 2 new spaces and a upgraded movie theater

Source: ps3blog.net

The US movie theater has just been one screen since the open Beta. Now it’s being expanded to 10 movie screens and a lobby. Some of the screening rooms may be giving stuff away too. Sony said that you might be able to watch full-length TV shows or movies in the screening rooms in the future.

Others updates is a Burn Zombie Burn space. Which has a zombie maze with exclusive prizes, and movies. Then MotorStorm Pacific Rift will get Game Launching. They are working a Space for MotorStorm as well. Here is a sneak peak.

Next (and this is very exciting) as of tomorrow, we will be launching a new event in PlayStation Home – the Fat Princess “Quest for Cake.” Based upon the brilliant PSN title which launches today, all you have to do is click on the PlayStation Events Space chip on your World Map to join in this very special confectionary quest.

You have to find 8 pieces of cake in the Home Space to feed the princess to get your reward, a Fat Princess Throne. Good updates Sony, keep them coming.

The Curtain Rises on the 10-Screen Movie Theater in PlayStation Home, MotorStorm Game Launching Crashes In, and Fat Princess Needs Cake!

That’s 33 new articles this week! Last week, we had 18. We totally killed that record! Again, these don’t include store updates, last week’s Weekly Recap or QuickNews. As for other things, I give up! Once again, Eddie receives the much sought-after ‘Contributor of the Week’ title with 10 entries. Good job!

Emrah also get’s the ‘Comment of the Week’, only because he made me laugh so hard. It was a comment left in this article, and read:

First see-through nipple I’ve seen on ps3blog.

If you missed it, the picture used in the original posting was borderline inappropriate. You were able to see through the top she was wearing (though barely), revealing, well, the body part mentioned above. It was a good laugh though!

For past Weekly Recaps, you can view the archive here. You know, in case you missed it and/or you want to see what other stories you missed.

An Opinion on Sony’s Face Recognition, the Eye and Marketing

Source: ps3blog.net

I know it was mentioned earlier, but we have slightly more details.

Anyway, the controller apparently is able to perform facial recognition. Not only that, but it can do a variety of other things as well. IGN reports:

it was revealed that the technology can detect the position and direction of player’s heads, as well as their gender, age and certain facial gestures

Sony’s stated that the technology is already there. Not only that, but they also claim that their technology is more accurate than XBox 360’s as well. So now my question is, if this technology is so grand and spectacular, how come we never see anything beyond novelty games? In all truthfulness, I honestly believe it’s how this Eye was revealed to the public and the lack of advertising.

The PlayStation Eye never really had a ridiculous trailer showing the camera in “action” and magically scanning a skateboard deck, including the areas behind the fingers (watch the Natal trailer). Most of what Sony had were just a bunch of tech demos and only pushing Eye of Judgment really. Most of the software released seems like they’re only tech demos as well. Not only that, but has anyone seen any commercials, or ads, for the PlayStation Eye?

If Sony really wants to push this technology, they need to come up with some brilliant ideas to convince consumers (and developers) to buy and invest in these kinds of games. Hopefully, that’s what we’ll start seeing soon, because, since Microsoft revealed ‘Project Natal’, Sony finally seems to be pushing the technology. But is it too late? Sony attended the Develop conference in Brighton, England yesterday. Maybe they convinced developers to start developing these types of games? I hope so. Hopefully, third party developers who have started working on games for Project Natal will also develop the games for the Eye as well, so all of those won’t wind up being 360 exclusives.

In the end, though, I still feel this entire type of fad gaming is a bit overrated and will not last for very long. There will most likely be loads of shovelware (junk games, usually for a quick buck). The Wii, for instance, has lots of titles to play, but about 96% of them are shovelware! I still don’t know why it’s so popular! But here’s hoping Sony can pull this off and compete with both the Wii and 360 on a more successful level, but considering their lack of advertising and bad marketing as of thus far into the PS3’s cycle, it’s going to be a very steep climb. The nice thing is, 360 and PS3 have about even footing in sales, so I feel if Sony pushes the marketing and advertising of their products, sales would boom (especially if they released the Slimline models soon and introduced them with a price cut). They better do it soon, because the Holiday season will be here faster than you think!

More Killzone 2 Napalm and Cordite DLC Details

Source: ps3blog.net

As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, there’s going to be another DLC pack coming our way, entitled Napalm and Cordite. It includes the two new maps Suljeva Cliffside and Arctower Landing. Today, we have a few more morsels, including the above trailer.

Previously mentioned on the official blog was that the new DLC will bring two weapons into the multiplayer scene, carried over from single player. These are the VC1 flamethrower and Boltgun 4400 (my personal favorite). Here are a few details, according to the posting up on the official blog:

Both of these weapons radically alter the Killzone 2 multiplayer dynamic, delivering an experience that’s as fresh as it is intense. If you’re a veteran Killzone 2 online player looking to mix it up, or if you simply liked wielding these weapons in the single player campaign, Napalm & Cordite is your ticket. Look for it on the PlayStation Store July 23rd!

Now I just gotta find the money to get it! Also, IGN has an interview with Guerrilla Games about the upcoming map pack.

This is rather obvious, but should still be said: Sony has warned users not to give out personal information to other users in Home claiming to be a Sony representative and promise to give them access to special items in Home by asking for your PSN ID (email address) and the Password. According to Sony, “We would like to remind you that the Home staff will never ask you for your password, or any other personal information in Home.

According to GamesIndustry.biz, the user-created quizzes on MyBuzz has topped 1.7 Million questions (218,750 quizzes)! That’s enough quizzes and questions, according to the publisher, for 350 Buzz retail titles! Also of note, PlayStation Home will have a cut-down variant of the game that will also stream user-created questions this week. For those who haven’t played, or heard of, Buzz Quiz TV, it’s a very fun trivia game, especially with friends and family! Multiple quiz packs also available via PSN.

Upcoming Killzone 2 Patch and DLC Details

Source: ps3blog.net

29e23rm.jpg

Guerrilla Games just posted an update on the official blog pertaining to the upcoming “Patch 1.28″, which is set to be released Tuesday, July 14th at 8AM GMT worldwide (for those of us in the states, that 12AM Pacific). When the patch is released, the servers will be down for testing and whatnot to make sure everything is stable, so keep that in mind. Here’s a few of the patch changes/additions/fixes:

  • Feature – Detailed information screen when browsing games. Items displayed include: Friendly Fire, Faction Balancing, Custom Weapons and Custom Badges as well as the region, game size, selected maps and allowed Missions and Badges.
  • Feature – Higher values for Bodycount mode. Players can now create games with 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 50, 100 and 200 points to increase the time of the mode for 32 player games.
  • Feature – Moderators can now create double-points events.
    New loading screens.
  • Fix for network error displayed when trying to log in with another users account.
  • Exploit – Radec Academy collision fix to prevent players being revived inside a pillar and using it to their advantage.

As far as the DLC goes, not too much has been released on that except for a few tidbits from the update and the maps’ names. It’s called “Napalm & Cordite”, which includes the two new maps“Suljeva Cliffside” and “Arctower Landing”. Additional details about the new DLC pack will be made public next week.

Sony Patents New Motion Control Technology

Source: ps3blog.net

35herkz.jpg
Sony has filed a new patent allowing the PlayStation Eye to scan everyday objects for in-game use. According to Gamesindustry.biz:

The patent details a system where a camera can map in any real world item, reports Siliconera. Examples given include a coffee mug, drinking glass, books and bottles, however the mapping system is expected to be able to identify any three dimension object.

It’s definitely sounds far improved from an old tech demo from a while back where it would scan 2D objects and turn them into tanks.

There currently aren’t any videos available showcasing the technology, but Siliconera has pictures and information from the patent here. The patent explains that the above examples are also outlined, but the figures show a U-shaped object as an example.
