The Last Guy review video (PlayStation Network)

Source: videogamesblogger.com

The Last Guy logoA fast-paced rescue game with easy-to-play controls, The Last Guy uses real-life aerial maps of 14 cities around the world for its levels, including Asakusa (Tokyo, Japan), Los Angeles (America), and London (England). Within a set time limit, the player - who is the last hope for to save mankind from the zombies that are taking over Earth - navigates through the city map, gathering survivors hidden out in buildings along the way and leading them to a designated “escape zone.” As the player rushes around the level picking up survivors, a line of nervous people forms behind him and follows his every move around the level, scrambling back inside nearby buildings if a zombie gets too close.

The earth has been struck by a mysterious purple beam of light, and everyone touched by it has turned into a giant zombie. You are the chosen one and it is up to you to rescue the last survivors on earth by leading them to safety through zombie-infested streets. With a classic arcade style overhead view, make your way through detailed real-world cities and use your heat vision to find people hiding in buildings. Then lead them to the Escape Zone before time runs out in this frantic game.

Put on your cape and save humanity. Find out all about it in this The Last Guy video review.

The Last Guy’s key features are:
* Real Cities – Each stage is brought to life with real aerial photography of the actual city, with multiple levels of zoom to get the best view of the area to see where the survivors, and zombies, are hiding out.
* Zombies and Bosses – The Last Guy features 10 types of zombies and 4 types of bosses to avoid and outwit as the player races around the city rescuing survivors.
* Special Abilities – Utilize special powers such as dash to get away from zombies, thermography vision to see where people are hiding, a whistle to get your long line to huddle up and get out of zombies’ paths, and the ability to surround a cluster of people completely with a line of people and instantly rescue them all.
* Power-Ups – Take advantage of five kinds of power-ups to help complete each stage, including stamina boosts, freezing time, warping back to the Escape Zone, and temporary invisibility.
* Extra Stages – Players can unlock Extra Stages to play with super high scores.

To quote the video review: “There’s replay value here, but don’t expect to get 40 hours out of the game or anything; a few of the levels are scream-at-your-dog tough, but that just makes getting past them all the more rewarding; and although the art and graphics work for the title, they’re nothing to write home about. It should be noted that it can be difficult to play the game when you’re not sitting near your TV and that there are no Trophies to speak of in the title.

The Last Guy is an outstanding title that’s challenging, funny, and fresh. Yes, it’s a download and it’s rather simple looking, but once you get your hands on the controls and get to the point where you’ve tanked for the fifth time in a row and are plotting a path on the map overview before your next deployment, you’ll know why this game rocks. Plain and simple, The Last Guy deserves to have a place on your hard drive.”

Bionic Commando Rearmed review video

Source: videogamesblogger.com

Rearmed screenshot
Classic side-scrolling gameplay is reporting back for duty with Bionic Commando Rearmed for Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and PC, it’s a remake of the classic NES game. 20 years after the 8-bit classic was released, Bionic Commando Rearmed recreates the world of the original with a complete “2.5D” visual revamp. Bionic Commando Rearmed preserves the original’s mix of swinging and shooting in an intense 2D side-scroller, all to the tune of a brand-new soundtrack based on the classic 8-bit music from the NES masterpiece.

But Rearmed is far more than just a remake - it features all-new modes such as the 2-player co-op play, smarter enemy AI, new bionic arm abilities, new weapons, bigger bosses, online rankings, a frenetic multiplayer mode for up to four players, and a series of over 50 devious challenge rooms to test your swinging skills. Faithfully sticking to the original story, Bionic Commando Rearmed tells the story of Nathan “R.A.D.” Spencer’s first mission, sent in to retrieve captured agent Super Joe from the hands of the Imperials. Fans of the original story can expect to see all the characters from the NES version, as well as the memorable moments that made the title so popular with fans.

Does the series swing back into the spotlight? Find out in this Bionic Commando Rearmed video review.

To quote the video review: “At $10, Bionic Commando Rearmed is a steal. It’s one of those games that feels organic to play. There are certainly some hangovers from the age the game was originally released in, but its stylized production values and challenging gameplay will get you hooked. It would’ve been great to play co-op online with friends but there’s so much content for the money that we’re not about to complain.”

Bionic Commando: Rearmed sells 130,000 times in 1 week

Source: videogamesblogger.com

Rearmed Screenshot

Bionic Commando: Rearmed has sold 130,000 downloadable copies in only 1 week says Capcom! That’s quite the achievement for a downloadable title and Capcom has to be quite pleased to see the remake of their classic NES game do so well.

The game is available for PC, Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network and sales were across all three platforms.

Producer Ben Judd was quite elated and had this to say:

“Holy fiddlesticks,” Judd proclaims in his post. “That may not seem impressive compared to package titles that sell in the millions but compared to other digital titles that is a friggin’ JUGGERNAUT!

“And while, it’s great to have my first title be not only a critically acclaimed one but also a financial success, there is a bigger picture at play here that we need to look at. Consumers voted with their dollars. They basically have sent the message loud and clear:

We are tired of meta-emulated crap.
We want the titles of yesteryear to be paid the proper respect.
We want them done right.
And if the price is right, we’ll buy.”

Personally I think it’s great to see Bionic Commando: Rearmed doing so well. Hopefully it’ll help to raise the bar for remakes of classic games even higher. And not only that, I hope it makes Nintendo and Capcom both realize that Bionic Commando SHOULD come to the Wii Virtual Console! Forget anything that’s already happened, it’s such a classic that the game simply MUST come!

New PlayStation Network titles include Savage Moon and a Warhawk expansion

Source: videogamesblogger.com

Screenshot of Sony's new PSN title Savage MoonSavage Moon is an all-new PlayStation Network title revealed by Sony; which it announced in addition to Warhawk: Operation Fallen Star, which is the third expansion pack for Warhawk that will be released tomorrow, August 28th, 2008.

Savage Moon is an all-new game that will be coming to the PlayStation Network. It’s described by Sony as a “classic tower strategy” game with this game’s unique hook being that it takes place in space. Players are assigned to protect a planetary outpost that has being overrun by “gigantic, ravenous space bugs” ala Starship Troopers.

Like other games of it’s ilk, players will need to put down towers in the most ideal spots to handle the oncoming infestation so you aren’t overrun by the “ravenous space bugs”. You then can convert kill points into better weapons.

As far as Warhawk: Operation Fallen Star is concerned, the third expansion for the game will introduce a new forest location called Tau Crater, where some “experimental technology” has been recovered from a Chernovan warship that has crashed. What is said technology? JETPACKS!

In addition to the jetpacks, the game will include 10 new battlefields.

PixelJunk Eden review video (PS3)

Source: videogamesblogger.com

PixelJunk Eden logoPixelJunk Eden is the third PlayStation Network title from the PixelJunk series by Japanese developer Q-Games. PixelJunk Eden welcomes you to a psychedelic world unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before.

As a tiny, silk-spinning ‘grimp’, it is up to you to collect the lost “Spectra” that have been scattered across all the gardens of Eden. You grip, jump and swing, destroying “Prowlers” and collecting their pollen which lets you grow more plants to take you further and deeper into the garden to locate the precious “Spectra.” Lush visuals, slick controls and music make it an atmospheric and addictive experience.

Fertilized with intuitive gameplay, does this garden grow on the player? Find out in this PixelJunk Eden video review.

To quote the video review: “Eden’s hypnotic colors, combined with upbeat, trance-inducing grooves, make it one of the more therapeutic experiences available. The entire game is bathed in flat hues, but the seemingly simple visuals are bolstered by its unique art style. It’s almost always pretty to look at and visually interesting. Garden seven’s twist on gravity will have you struggling to find right-side up as you fight against everything your mind is telling you.

PixelJunk Eden is a game worth putting down the chain gun for. Its simple, intuitive gameplay, combined with a clever use of strategy and impressive length make it a great buy for PS3 owners looking for a cheap fix. Looks can sometimes be deceiving, and if you give this garden a chance you’ll end up with a green thumb in no time.”

Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty review video (PS3 expansion)

Source: videogamesblogger.com

Quest for Booty logoThe swashbuckling action in Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty begins one year following the intense ending in Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. Ratchet’s desperate search for Clank resumes with a bang as he finds himself engulfed in ship-board combat — only to be cast adrift and washed up on the shores of a remote island on the planet Merdegraw. Our Lombax hero must overcome life-threatening challenges, encounter hostile new alien races and even form an allegiance with dreaded Captain Slag’s first mate, Rusty Pete. All in the pursuit of clues that lead Ratchet to the treasure of Captain Angstrom Darkwater, Slag’s former commander and keeper of the only known link to the mysterious Zoni: the Fulcrum Star.

Push, pull, and manipulate objects as you solve various puzzles using Ratchet’s new wrench. New Light/Dark gameplay: Illuminate dark areas and use your wits to survive encounters with enemies that live in the dark. New Pirate Puzzles: Mix brew, manipulate shadows, and play tunes to find hidden booty.

Insomniac’s Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty is the second installment of Sony’s popular platfomer to hit the PS3. In an interesting twist, however, Quest for Booty comes in at a lower-priced, download-only PSN title. Watch this video review.

Click on the bottom-right corner arrow to view it fullscreen.

To quote the video review: “While it’s easy to assume otherwise, Booty’s levels don’t feel like Tools of Destruction B-sides. Rather, they’re just more of a good thing, and they even look slightly better thanks to some lighting trickery and less repetitive textures. Regrettably, the narrative doesn’t feel quite so advanced; considering it picks up right where Future leaves off — with Clank having been taken by the time-controlling Zoni — Booty tromps off with its own side story, ending on the same cliffhanger with little more resolved. You have to admire the ambition of doing anything in so little time ? developer Insomniac even managed to squeeze in a heartfelt moment between Ratchet and ladyfriend Talwyn — but a little evolution in the series’ first overarching plot point would’ve been nice.

finished Quest for Booty in about two and a half hours. Add a little more if you’re somebody who doesn’t play videogames for a living, but take it right back if you’re any sort of Ratchet fan. Just to be very clear: I don’t care about the price — I’ll pay $15 for a few hours of Ratchet every time. But what should’ve been a love letter to fans ends up serving better as a taste of what outsiders are missing — and, as a fan, that makes me just a little bit sad.”
