More girls becoming gamers according to the NPD

Source: videogamesblogger.com

Girls Playing Video GamesA study by the NPD Group on young girls called “Girl Power: Understanding This Important Consumer Segment”, which examines how girls ages 2 to 14 years old spend their time in a typical week, has found that this group are increasingly spending more of their time playing PC and video games.

Girls ages 2-5 still spend the majority of their time with toys and dolls, but as they reach 6 to 8 years old they start becoming interested in board games and “virtual worlds”. By the time they reach 9-12 traditional toys are still their primary activity, but the NPD has found that these tweens start migrating to computer and video games, especially virtual online worlds.”

“Socialization is gearing up among the pre-teens, and the advent of interactive gaming really hits home with these girls who are looking for friends from the confines of their homes,” NPD explains. “Young Teens (age 13-14) are also gamers, but many girls this age are also now listening to music on portable digital music players and talking/texting on their mobile phones.”

“Some very traditional play patterns still are the most popular among girls, even in this digital age,” said Anita Frazier, NPD’s industry analyst. “Over 50 percent of girls ages 2-14 engage with dolls, plush, and arts & crafts in a given week which is a testament to the evergreen nature of these types of activities for girls.”

“Girls, in general, are famously social creatures,” continued Frazier. “The growth in use of social networking and virtual world websites by girls is a natural extension of this core value which needs to be recognized by manufacturers who count girls as primary market for their goods and services.”

The poor mans Mario, Aldo’s Adventure

Source: infendo.com

Back in the day when you could copy that floppy, there was an MS Dos game called Aldo’s Adventure. If you were unfortunate to be around back then and witness the travesties of copyright infringement you might of witnessed this weird Mario/Donkey Kong Clone where the main goals were to avoid barrels, lava, and get treasure chests. Now, if only Mario was called Aldo… would we have had Mario’s Adventure…? Lets not think about that.

Pikmin, Mario Power Tennis remakes confirmed for North American releases in 2009

Source: infendo.com

Pikmin and Mario Tennis are coming to Wii in 2009. The remakes, that is.

Siliconera reports today Nintendo has confirmed the Pikmin and Mario Power Tennis “Wii-makes” will be released in North America in 2009.

No specific North American dates were given, but Pikmin is now on track for a Dec. 25 release in Japan.

The confirmation comes from a PDF skeleton plan issued by Nintendo of Japan for 2009. The Donkey Kong Jungle Beat remake is curiously absent from the North American list, as is Disaster: Day of Crisis.

Nintendo announced the “Play on Wii” selection earlier this month, a collection of GameCube classics being remade specifically for Wii. It begins Dec. 11 with Jungle Beat in Japan. Chibi Robo!, Pikmin 2, Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes also follow in 2009.

No pricing details have been confirmed for North America. Pikmin will cost 3,800 yen in Japan, 2,000 yen less than a standard Wii title.

iGolf and iBowl sell 2 million on iPhone. iBaseball out now

Source: videogamesblogger.com

iBaseball screenshot for iPhone

It has been revealed that IGolf and IBowl for Apple’s iPhone have sold a phenomenal 2 million copies since they’re release on the App Store, which debuted on July 11th for iPhone and iPod Touch.

Thanks to that success, the game’s developer, SGN, has also released their newest game, iBaseball. Reports techcrunch.

All of the game’s from the publisher are free to download, and they use the accelerometer in your iPhone to control gameplay, allow you to make motions to throw or bat, for example, much like games for the Nintendo Wii. iBaseball includes applause and sound effects, vibration for when a hit is made and even supports left-handed gameplay. You can also challenge a friend to play, but only by taking turns. However direct head-to-head play will be coming soon as announced by CEO Shervin Pishevar, who also announced that more games from the developer are inevitable (that goes without saying).

The App Store has been a tremendous success so far. There are over 700 iPhone games and applications on the App Store and include some big names that are either already released or in development, including Super Monkey Ball Iphone (which has sold over 300,000 copies), Star Wars The Force Unleashed, Spore Origins, Need for Speed Undercover, Wolfenstein RPG and Doom RPG2, Real Soccer 2009, Bomberman, Peggle, Sonic the Hedgehog, Tetris, The Sims: DJ, The Sims: Bowling, The Sims: Pool, Bejeweled and many, many more.

Manhunt 2 silly-walking into UK on Halloween

Source: infendo.com

The Queen decreed, “You shall simulate murder with your Wii remote.” God save the Queen.

Rockstar Games’ controversial Manhunt 2 has secured an Oct. 31 release in the United Kingdom.

The UK version of Rockstar’s gruesome Wii thriller has been “heavily reworked” from the US version, according to IGN.

Rejected by the Ministry of Silly Walks the British Board of Film Classification in June 2007, Manhunt 2 was criticized for “unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone.”

The Wii version of Manhunt 2 released to mixed reviews in North America last Halloween. It has sold approximately 200,000 copies since according to VGChartz, slightly less than the PS2 version.
