Gearbox’s Aliens game rumored to be cancelled

Source: videogamesblogger.com

Aliens: Colonial Marines is an upcoming first-person shooter based on the Aliens franchise (films, comic books, etc.). Although the game has been in development for some time, rumors were recently swirling around that the game may have been can canceled.

Shacknews reported that Gearbox, the game’s developer, laid off a bunch of people due to underwhelming sales figures of their latest FPS, Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway. Which, according to Shacknews, debuted at #9 on the NPD Group’s weekly PC sales charts before falling off the following week. The game did not place on the U.S. console sales charts for either September or October (the console versions were released on September 23rd in the U.S.), although Ubisoft partly attributed their strong second quarter sales figures to the game.

Due to this, multiple sources then reported that Aliens: Colonial Marines had been put on hold, at the very least.

Now though, the game’s developer, Randy Pitchford, has cleared things up with the following comment:

“Aliens isn’t canned,” said Pitchford. “We’ve made some transformative changes and yes, that’s meant some talent changes, but that’s not the real story. The true relevance of the story will actually be irrelevant until we release our next game, at which time I hope there will be a lot of interest in what we’ve done that can produce such results.”

Hopefully the game still sees release because it was looking extremely promising.

Resistance 3 rumored to continue from Resistance 2’s ending

Source: videogamesblogger.com

Resistance 3 PS3 fake boxartAs far back as October 2007, there have been Resistance 3 rumors by the likes of Surfer Girl and CVG that suggested that Resistance 2 would feature a cliff-hanger ending paving the way for a third game in the series.

Now that Resistance 2 will be out worldwide this week, fans of the PlayStation 3-exclusive FPS are beginning to finish the campaign. Guess what they are finding out? That developer Insomniac Games saying the game tells “the story of Nathan Hale in his last 19 hours to live” where more than foreshadowing. But that’s not how it ends, in fact, Hale’s last words in Resistance 2 are — and I quote — “Can you hear them? They are calling to us. It’s beautiful. […] This is just the beginning.”

Obvious spoilers aside, you can watch a camera recording by Slaesil of the ending below (it’s the only ending, there are no alternatives) and judge for yourself how likely a Resistance Trilogy is.

PS: My guess would be that Resistance 3 will be announced in 2009 and released by 2010. Especially with Insomniac mentioning in past interviews that they are enjoying their current Ratchet & Clank / Resistance yearly rotation.

Will Arnett and Neil Patrick Harris to star in Matt Hazard game

Source: videogamesblogger.com

The Return of Matt Hazard screenshot
D3Publisher (D3P) has announced that award-winning Hollywood actors Will Arnett, best known to audiences for his roles on television’s 30 Rock and Arrested Development, and Neil Patrick Harris, currently appearing on television’s How I Met Your Mother, will voice the main characters in Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard. This original third-person shooter with a sense of humour is anticipated for release in Q1 2009 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

In Eat Lead, Will Arnett will bring to life classic 80’s videogame action hero Matt Hazard. Matt gets his chance to prove once and for all that he is the king of shooters when Wallace “Wally” Wellesley, new owner of mega game publisher Marathon Megasoft, voiced by Neil Patrick Harris, gives Matt his comeback role starring in a new next-gen title that pits him against all of his memorable foes from videogames past. In the world of Eat Lead, however, everything stops being a game and becomes reality when players discover through the original storyline brought to life by Arnett’s and Harris’ voiceover that someone is using the new game to bring about Matt’s death once and for all.

Matt Hazard is in trouble, and Mr. Harris is behind it all. Voiced by Neil Patrick Harris who makes it legen… “wait for it” …DARY!

Harris’ acting credits span from his award-winning childhood role on“Doogie Howser, M.D.” to his current Emmy-nominated role on“How I Met Your Mother.” He is also recognized for his performance in a number of feature films including Harold&Kumar Go To White Castle (2004) and its sequel Harold&Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay (2008), Undercover Brother (2002) and Starship Troopers (1997). In addition, Harris has starred in many Broadway shows and currently headlines the internet sensation, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog (2008).

How did acting legend Will Arnett find himself voicing the baddest action game character ever?

Arnett’s acting career spans well over a decade and includes an Emmy-nominated performance for his portrayal of Gob on“Arrested Development” followed by a second Emmy-nomination in 2007 for his performance on“30 Rock.” He is also well known for his roles in feature films including Semi-Pro (2008), Blades of Glory (2007), The Brothers Solomon (2007) and Let’s Go to Prison (2006).

Atari has announced that first person shooter The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is joining its 2009 line up. In conjunction with Universal Pictures Digital Platforms Group, Tigon Studios and acclaimed developer Starbreeze Studios, Atari is bringing the franchise to the new generation of consoles for the first time packed with thrilling new adventures. The highly anticipated title is scheduled for launch on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in spring 2009.

The title features a brand new exhilarating adventure, a high-definition re-imagining of the classic Escape from Butcher Bay campaign and new multiplayer options, The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena will thrill fans when it launches in spring 2009.

Previously announced as a remake of hit title The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (PC, Xbox) with added content, Atari revealed that The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena contains a brand new full-length campaign. This exciting announcement promises a title which will include the original game re-imagined for a whole new audience, an entirely new chapter in the Riddick saga and, for the first time, intense online multiplayer combat, making The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena a must-have experience for any fan of intense action gaming.

In The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena the player takes the role of Riddick, as played by Vin Diesel, using stealth and action to overcome the merciless crew of the predatory Merc-ship Dark Athena which awaits its prey in the dark reaches of space. Cheating death through a series of spectacular battles and events, Riddick will fight for his life amid a storm of malevolence and horror. The Chronicles of Riddick series of games takes the player deeper into the universe of Universal Pictures’ films The Chronicles of Riddick and cult classic Pitch Black, which first introduced Vin Diesel as enigmatic anti-hero Riddick.

“It’s very exciting to have Assault on Dark Athena as part of Atari’s 2009 publishing line-up,” said Phil Harrison, President of Infogrames Entertainment, the parent company of Atari. “The first game in the series was a landmark in action gaming and the outstanding team at Starbreeze are creating a feature-packed follow-up which will delight fans and new players alike.”

“The Riddick IP offers a rich universe from which to develop no-holds barred games, and we’ve believed that since the days of the Pitch Black film,” said Bill Kispert, Vice President and General Manager, Interactive, Universal Pictures Digital Platforms Group. “Assault on Dark Athena extends the franchise fiction; adds to the mythology with new storylines, characters and locations while remaining true to the original material; and gives fans an experience they haven’t seen before. As we introduce this new Riddick chapter, we are also excited to welcome Atari to the Riddick family.”

“We’re thrilled about this remake and expansion of Escape from Butcher Bay.” said Ian Stevens, Head of Game Production, Tigon Studios. “Assault on Dark Athena tells a new story in The Chronicles of Riddick, while at the same time sharing our original vision with a larger audience. We’re excited about the coming months and talking more in-depth about new features like the addition of Multiplayer!”

“Working with the Riddick franchise for us is an extraordinary experience,” said Johan Kristiansson, CEO, Starbreeze Studios. “We are deeply enthusiastic about the partnership with Atari that will bring this rich game experience to a new generation of consoles. With this release we’ve pushed the limits of the Starbreeze engine, delivering an extensive game package designed to thrill gamers worldwide. We can’t wait for it to hit the shelves.”
