Today Nintendo of Europe (and Australia) added new classic games to the popular Wii Shop Channel. The games went live at midnight CET. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at stores like Amazon UK (Card).
In addition to the three new games, the Nintendo Channel comes to Europe today. It adds the ability to download DS game demos and stream game trailers and video interviews directly onto your Wii.
We’ve included videos of the games so you can see if it’s for you. This week’s new games are:
Pokemon Puzzle League (Nintendo 64, 1-2 players, 1,000 Wii Points = €10 / £7.50 / AU$15): Get ready for a new kind of Pokémon battle where the power and speed of your brain are just as important as the strength of your Pokémon. Join Ash, Brock, Misty and many more characters from the Pokémon animated series as they gather in Puzzle Village to compete for the title of Pokémon Puzzle Master. Just match three or more blocks of the same color in any direction. Sounds simple, right? But the actual game play is surprisingly addictive and deep (chains and combos anyone?), especially when you’re facing off against a human opponent. Choose from six different modes offering a wide range of action, from story or puzzle modes to continuous play or timed play. If that’s not enough, take on the challenge in 3-D and get ready for more blocks than ever before. Featuring animated cut scenes combined with bright, fun graphics, there’s enough to satisfy any fan of Pokémon or puzzle games.
Samurai Shodown (priced 900 Wii Points = €9 / £6.75 / AU$13.50): A popular SNK fighting game from 1993 on the NEO GEO for 1-2 players.
Burning Fight (priced 900 Wii Points = €9 / £6.75 / AU$13.50): A SNK side-scrolling beat ‘em up game from 1991 (similar to Final Fight) on the NEO GEO for 1-2 players.
Atari and Namco Bandai announced the release date of Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Heroes 2: The Phantom Fortress for PSP in America as June 24th and in Europe in July 2008. The PlayStation Portable game uses the battle system of the PlayStation 2 Ultimate Ninja series, adding an exclusive storyline, full-blown battles with brand new jutsu and animation, and wireless 2-player action and co-op multiplayer to create a whole new Naruto adventure for PSP. Set in the Naruto universe popularised by the anime TV show.
A mysterious flying fortress has descended onto the Hidden Leaf Village. In the role of Naruto, the player must enter the fortress, uncover the hidden plot and unlock characters on the way up the 100 floors of the Phantom Fortress to ultimately defeat the enemy and unveil the explosive ending. Create teams of powerful ninja to aid you on your quest from over 20 of the most popular characters from the animated series, each with their unique Jutsu, combos and Special Techniques. The Secret Technique is a new battle system different to the special moves seen in previous Ultimate Ninja series which allows for faster, more explosive and intense action sequences unlike any other currently available on portable games. You can also power up your favourite characters to give you a winning edge in battle.
While staying faithful to the hugely popular anime, Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Heroes 2: The Phantom Fortress boasts a completely new original adventure, plus co-op gameplay and multiplayer action. A choice of six thrilling gameplay modes ensures plenty of ninja ass-kicking battles. The deep single player MUGENJO Mode is filled with dramatic events, exciting movies and intriguing dialogue which let the player enjoy the story to the full. Other fun modes include the Naruto Points Mode for obtaining and viewing unlockable items and Wireless Battle Mode for challenging friends anytime, anywhere using the WLAN feature of PSP in six types of intense two-player battles using different team combinations.

BlazBlue (AKA Blaze Blue) is a 2D one-on-one fighting game by ARC System Works (the creators of Guilty Gear), which is why some suggest BlazBlue is the spiritual successor to Guilty Gear. Produced by Guilty Gear producer Toshimichi Mori, the game features an all-original cast (including many weapon fighters). So far it’s only been announced for release in Japanese Arcades, but Famitsu suggested a PlayStation 3 version is likely sometime after the 2008 Arcade release.
The game uses a four-button control scheme (weak, medium and strong attacks plus an EX button which makes your character perform unique special attacks). The fighting system is based around players being able to continue combos when opponents are in a down state. On the defensive side, you’ll have a number of ways of getting back up when downed, so you don’t get pummeled by combo attacks. BlazeBlue employs the Type X2 arcade board and mixes 3D characters and 3D backdrops.
According to an IGN preview “everything in BlazBlue is gorgeous. The fighters are silky in their animations and backgrounds are jaw-dropping.”
Gametrailers has posted a very good video which takes a closer look at Capcom’s recent Street Fighter IV debut trailer. What clues can you pick out from the trailer? Is the game going to be 3D or not? Before you check out the video after the jump head over to 360style.net and download some Street Fighter IV wallpapers.
In a announcement today comes word that Virtua Fighter 5 on the Xbox 360 is to feature online play. Additionally to this comes a host of other improvements that certainly distinguish itself from other versions of the came already available.
SEGA® Europe, Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. announced today that the highly-anticipated arcade fighting game, Virtua Fighter™ 5 for the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, will feature an online versus mode at launch in Autumn 2007. The Xbox 360™ version of Virtua Fighter™ 5 is based on the latest arcade version update and features both analogue-stick and D-pad control, as well as vibration support. The game also includes an improved Quest mode featuring more CPU rivals, items, and emblems for character customization. The DOJO mode has added features including leaderboards, training move settings, improved throw and escape training, and the option to change your opponent’s position and recovery type. These all work to create a more refined DOJO mode where players can improve their fighting strategy.
This is great news, but only if it doesn’t have any show stopping lag issues. Fighting game fanatics will be the first to tell you that they don’t wont online play if it’s going to have lag, but if AM2 is willing to go forward with online play for the first time in any Virtua Fighter game to date then more power to them. Hopefully it will turn out better then that of Dead or Alive 4’s underwhelming online performance.

The reports as of late calling for the demise of HD-DVD have been greatly exaggerated. According to the latest sales figures from Amazon, HD-DVD has made a Rocky Balboa like comeback to rise once again a top of the sales charts. For those of you who invested in the HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox 360 can safely breath safely with relief for a little while longer that you didn’t make a bad choice.
With the release of the latest James Bond film on Blu-ray, Casino Royale, reaching the top ten charts of all DVD sales in it’s first week ever for an HD format, it was perceived to be the beginning of the end for HD-DVD. Most likely attributed to the release of more new titles, we will have to see if the next slate of releases are going to continue an upward swing.
Virtua Fighter is considered to be one of the greatest fighters of all time and today I give to you the boxart for VF5. Can VF5 be a bigger hit than Dead or Alive 4? Most Likely Yes.
