Gearbox’s Aliens game rumored to be cancelled

Aliens: Colonial Marines is an upcoming first-person shooter based on the Aliens franchise (films, comic books, etc.). Although the game has been in development for some time, rumors were recently swirling around that the game may have been can canceled.

Shacknews reported that Gearbox, the game’s developer, laid off a bunch of people due to underwhelming sales figures of their latest FPS, Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway. Which, according to Shacknews, debuted at #9 on the NPD Group’s weekly PC sales charts before falling off the following week. The game did not place on the U.S. console sales charts for either September or October (the console versions were released on September 23rd in the U.S.), although Ubisoft partly attributed their strong second quarter sales figures to the game.

Due to this, multiple sources then reported that Aliens: Colonial Marines had been put on hold, at the very least.

Now though, the game’s developer, Randy Pitchford, has cleared things up with the following comment:

“Aliens isn’t canned,” said Pitchford. “We’ve made some transformative changes and yes, that’s meant some talent changes, but that’s not the real story. The true relevance of the story will actually be irrelevant until we release our next game, at which time I hope there will be a lot of interest in what we’ve done that can produce such results.”

Hopefully the game still sees release because it was looking extremely promising.

Microsoft speaks out on cancelation of Marvel Universe Online MMO

The Marvel Universe (not online now and never)Marvel Universe Online is canceled, Microsoft’s own Shane Kim confirmed in an interview with MTV Multiplayer’s Stephen Totilo.

Kim also went on to explain their reason for canceling the Marvel Comics MMO that was being developed by Cryptic Studios to be published by Microsoft. “When we first entered into the development and agreement of the development of ‘Marvel Universe Online,’ we thought we would create another subscription-based MMO,” said Kim. “And if you really look at the data there’s basically one that’s successful and everything else wouldn’t meet our level or definition of commercial success.”

So sad.

Marvel Universe Online was in development for Windows Vista and Xbox 360 and was set to draw from not only 60 years of Marvel Comics material, but also would integrate current and future events in the Marvel Universe into the game, and planned to do so for the next five to ten years after release. But alas, it was not to be.

The only trailer for the game was the teaser below, which didn’t show any gameplay but did highlight a ton of Marvel characters that would presumably be in the game, including: Apocalypse, Captain America, Cyclops, Daredevil, Doctor Doom, Doctor Octopus, Nick Fury, Galactus, the Hulk, Magneto, Nightcrawler, the Punisher, Quicksilver, a Sentinel, Spider-Man, the Thing, Uatu, and Wolverine.
