In the game, players will command armies of three-dimensional collectible character pieces for two different levels of play: Heroic for faster, more casual game play and Legendary for more strategic advanced gamers. Bungie has 3 games in development

Source: videogamesblogger.com

Pre-Order Halo Wars for Xbox 360Bungie is in development with three games, one a Halo title.

That’s according to an official statement from Bungie who said that they will not be revealing any of their titles at the upcoming PAX 2008 expo on August 29th. A reveal for at least one of the games was highly rumored at E3 2008, and has continued following the fact that they did not make any big reveals at E3 2008 or Comic-Con 2008.

Here is the full Bungie statement via Kotaku:

“For the record, we have no plans to make any big announcements or huge reveals at PAX this year. While we will have some Halo 3 multiplayer stuff for you to check out, this is not going to be the “big announcement” many of our fans are clamoring for. Rest assured that when the time is right, we will be making announcements and talking about the stuff we’re currently working on. At the moment we do have three distinct projects underway within Bungie - some familiar, some not. Some on a closer horizon, some quite far off.”

But just because there aren’t going to be any big reveals at PAX 2008, doesn’t mean that they won’t reveal something at the following big-show, which is Leipzig. That show starts on August 20th.

Is the next Halo game “darker, grittier,” tactical and without Master Chief?

Source: videogamesblogger.com

Next Halo game without Master Chief? An “insider source” with knowledge of the next Halo game has said that sometime this year Bungie will announce a “darker, grittier” Halo title without Master Chief in it.

According to the Gamespot source, the new Halo game will be a spin-off that resembles “a cross between Ghost Recon and Gears of War.” As in a tactical shooter. It will supposedly tell a “less cartoony” and “more bloody, violent, and grim” tale of a battle between UNSC forces and the Covenant. The game’s atmosphere was also described as similar to that of the live-action Halo shorts.

Expect Bungie’s next (Halo) game to be announced at the Pre-E3 Microsoft keynote that starts today at 10:30AM PST (US) / 19:30PM CET (UK). Watch E3 live at Gamespot so see the unveiling and find out if it’s true or not.

Is Marathon 4 or Halo 4 the new game announcement on Bungie Day 2008 on July 7? On the same day Halo 3 fans get a free map Cold Storage and more

Source: videogamesblogger.com

Bungie Day 2008 is almost upon us! The event will happen on July 7th. Outside of the freebies that will be given away, a new ViDoc has hinted that Bungie will announce a new game!

Halo 4 fake boxartTo quote: “Our independance has us driving towards becoming a multi-game studio, and the first thing we’re gonna announce today…” after which the first Bungie employee gets cut off by the second one who says “Whooo ho, we’re not announcing anything yet.” Could it be Halo 4 or Marathon 4?

Here’s what you can look forward to happening:
* Watch the new video documentary on Cold Storage:

* Cold Storage will be available for free beginning on July 7, Bungie Day, on Xbox Live Marketplace. Cold Storage is a remake of the Halo 1 map Chill Out.

Halo 3 for Xbox 360* Additionally, on 7/7, Microsoft is dropping the price of the Legendary Map Pack from 800 spacebucks to 600 spacebucks. — For now, Cold Storage will be implemented in regular rotation in playlists that require the Legendary Maps. To avoid confusion, playlists that previously required the Legendary Maps will now remind players that they need “all Maps” to participate, and since Cold Storage is free, it shouldn’t be a big deal for you to grab the map on July 7 and then return to your regularly scheduled business in SWAT.

* Additionally, don’t forget to grab the one-day-only free gamerpics (last year it included Mister Chief) and theme on 7/7.

* Beginning on July 7, there will be a 48-hour long seven-player FFA playlist in Halo 3’s Matchmaking where you can turn the calendar back to 2001 and control Rockets, Invis and Snipe.

* Next edition of the Bungie Podcast: Guests include: Lars Bakken, Shishka, Producer Allen Murray, Security Expert Jerome Simpson, IT Manager and Podcast Engineer Steve Lopez, Producer Joe Tung and Mission Architect Chris Carney. Save roughly 95 minutes of your day on Monday for the Bungie Podcast, which will likely include the New Game announcement.

Next Halo: The Cole Protocol novel is due fall 2008. It reveals the location of the Spartan Gray Team

Source: videogamesblogger.com

The Cole Protocol art
Halo: The Cole Protocol will be the sixth novel set in the Halo Universe, after Halo: Contact Harvest. Tobias S. Buckell, sci-fi author of Crystal Rain and Ragamuffin will pen the novel, which reveals the location of the Spartan Gray Team and “takes readers into an unexplored conflict of the Human-Covenant War where unlikely alliances are formed and shattered…” This group of Spartans was on an isolated mission during the events of the Halo videogames.

To clarify what The Cole Protocol is: “It’s a command enacted by Vice Admiral Preston Cole to prevent the Covenant from finding the location of Earth. Essentially, it is an order preventing Covenant retrieval of data that contains the location of Earth, and forbids retreating vessels from setting a direct slipspace course to Earth, as the Covenant are able to track slipspace travel and find Earth’s location. The policy also states that to prevent capture, any UNSC or Human vessel is to self destruct, after wiping all data matrices, to prevent the advance of the Covenant.” — Via Halopedia

Bungie and Microsoft’s Halo Franchise Development Director Frank O’Connor had this to say on the upcoming book, which is slated for a fall 2008 release, ” Buckell continues an excellent tradition that’s now a solid aspect of the Halo novels, bringing a fresh new perspective to a limitless universe and bringing his prodigious writing talents to bear in ways that will surprise and engage fans of the series and newcomers alike,” quotes Bungie.net.

Bungie reports in their weekly update that the Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack (due April 15th) comes with more than just three new maps priced at 800 Microsoft Points (that’s US$10 / €9.60 / £6.80 / CAN$12.40 / AU$13.20).

Halo 3 for Xbox 360To quote: “While the Legendary Map Pack doesn’t feature a map that you can build from scratch a la Foundry it does have a pretty unique series of Forge objects and some new knicks and knacks for Legendary purchasers to tool around with. The biggest new things are the Forge filters, these are forge objects that change the camera settings to create a variety of effects.” Outside of the default Basic setting, you’ll get these six filters: Gloomy, Juicy, Old Timey, Pen & Ink, Nova, and the Colorblind effect shown in the screenshot above.

Halo 4: The Secret Files. Everything Bungie talked about

Source: videogamesblogger.com

Halo 4 Xbox 360 fake boxartThe following Bungie developer interview notes are a summary of everything Halo 4 the company talked about or what was hinted at. We dubbed it “The Secret Files” that puts one and one together. Every Halo fan obviously knows the (original) Halo trilogy is over (and left with an open ending). But with Ensemble Studios working on the Halo Wars RTS prequel and an episodic Halo: Chronicles cinematic-game trilogy series still in the works by Peter Jackson, would a Halo 4 FPS really be that far fetched? Time to line up the facts…

July 14th 2006: Bungie audio director, Marty O’Donnell, said at the UK Game Developers Conference that “We all want Halo to be the great ending to an epic trilogy. We look at what Peter Jackson did with the Lord of the Rings films - which each film bettering the previous one and that is what we are aiming for.”

September 25th 2007: At the launch of Halo 3 the cinematic designer, Lee Wilson, said “There’s a lot of people who have been working on Halo much longer than us two have and they’re really interested in exploring new games, new stories, and whatever comes out of those conversations is what we’re going to pursue. We’re still going to make games for us.” And Joe Tung, multiplayer producer, said that the team was “figuring out right now what we’re working on next. We really don’t know what that is yet but as soon as we know, everyone else will know. Halo 4 is not in development.”

October 8th 2007: Halo movie director, Neill Blomkamp, confirmed that the Halo “film is entirely dead,” but consoled fans of the series by mentioning that “Well, we are already at work on another Halo game — I wouldn’t call it ‘Halo 4′, but it is based in the Halo Universe and represents a collaboration between Bungie and Peter Jackson. Halo 3 was definitely not the last Bungie Halo game.”

November 9th 2007: Bungie studio manager, Harold Ryan, mentioned that “Obviously Microsoft wanted us to make more Halo games. Both I and some of the more senior guys from the original Halo game have deep piles of game designs for the Halo universe that we are excited to build at some point. If the stars align and motivations are good and the platforms are right we’ll do them.”

Now in 2008: Bungie are still supporting the Xbox 360-exclusive Halo 3 with new map packs, as well as the above mentioned two Halo game spin-offs that are set for tentative Q4 2008 releases. It does look like they want to take a break from the series, which might be part of the reason why Bungie became independent from Microsoft. But since money makes the world ago around, and of course fans do want more, it’s doubtful Microsoft or Bungie will want to give up on the Halo series that as of October 4th, 2007, combined sold over 20 million copies worldwide. Perhaps by the time the Xbox 720 launches in 2011-2012 we’ll hear about Master Chief’s comeback in Halo 4.

Upcoming Halo 3 map Ghost Town shown and discussed in Bungie interview

Source: videogamesblogger.com

Halo 3 Ghost Town map screenshot
Ghost Town (formerly known as O.K. Corral) is the first map from the upcoming Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack. This second set of downloadable content will be released sometime this spring. Artists Vic DeLeon and Cameron Pinard and designer Lars Bakken answered a few quick questions you might have about this abandoned shell in Africa.

Q: What did each of you do on Ghost Town?

Vic: We split the map up into so many tasks that it became more of a collaborative effort than anything else either of us had ever worked on. It’s a small map comparatively speaking, so there were some challenging aspects- like who’s working on those polys over there? And hey I want to do that little part here! There are very few things that either of us can’t do, but we resolved to go with the idiom that I would direct the artistic direction and Cameron would take charge of the layout. Cameron’s heaviest influence was designing the blue base, the greenhouse building, and all that beautiful rebar. I worked on modeling the main areas around and inside the central building, the debris and damage everywhere, and placing all the vegetation throughout the map. We took turns modeling, painting, and detailing the terrain and the cliff walls.

Q: What’s the fictional premise behind Ghost Town?

Vic: Ghost Town is the fragmented ruins of a small 24th century water purification complex that geographically lies just North and West of the jungle foothills hydroelectric facility from the Sierra 117 mission. The well-protected facility built into a shallow ravine was once home to the Global Water Campaign, where the still somewhat-pure Kilimanjaro meltwater was transported via pipelines from the river and directed to this small outpost where it became further purified, and then transported via GWC trans-African pipelines along the Tsavo Highway for distribution throughout the entire continent.

Q: Was there a hook that led to the map’s initial creation?

Halo 3 for Xbox 360Vic: Yes and no. Steve Cotton started out with a very rough mass of spaces that were insanely fun to play in, and then Cameron and I were left with our imaginations running wild and our spirits ablaze, only to find ourselves pounding our heads against large heavy things. There was blood. When we got started on the map it was literally a group of boxes posing as buildings and feeling like swiss cheese. Some of the guys during our early playtests (not sure who) started calling it “The Ghost Town Map” and it totally stuck, even after a brief effort to rename it Mortar. Is this something I should mention? How about “Some of us were affectionately calling it the Counter-Strike map.”

Q: From beginning to end how long did Ghost Town take to complete?

Vic: The first massed out models were created in mid-September of 2007 so it’s been about 4-5 months.

Q: What’s the nuts and bolts premise behind Ghost Town in terms of gameplay?

Cameron: Essentially Ghost Town is an asymmetric map designed for 4v4 encounters, it’s meant to be a strong infantry map where you get a nice range of close combat and longer range. The spaces are set up to allow two to three person squads a good bit of operating room and several tactical options.

Q: What gametypes is the map designed for?

Cameron: As an asymmetric map it’s designed for things like One Bomb, and One Flag, it also creates a great environment for FFA and team slayer. Overall though, the map is more general purpose and of course balancing is done with an eye towards our more popular game types.

Q: How has the map layout evolved over time with Ghost Town? Have different configurations resulted in a map that plays different?

Cameron: The core layout has actually been fairly constant throughout development, while a few areas have been added, for the most part it follows the original layout. Over time the map become more and more porous, we also worked on funneling action into more interesting areas of the map. I’d have to defer to Lars on most of the design changes over time.

Lars: Like Cameron said the core layout hasn’t changed much. For a time we had the “bases” switched, in terms of gameplay. The fortified building used to be the attacker spawn in objective games and the open cave spawn used to be the defender base. We made some changes to the building (added another way in), and then switched to its current configuration. Other subtle (or not so subtle, heh) changes were swapping the Spartan Laser for the Rocket Launcher, and removing the Regenerator for the Grav Lift. This one was actually pretty cool, because it allows players to enter into the second floor of the center building now without taking the normal routes in.
