Alpha Protocol has been announced as an epic new RPG developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Sega. Obsidian is well known and respected as the developers of Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords and Neverwinter Nights 2.

In the espionage world of Alpha Protocol, nothing is as it seems. Players will assume the role of Michael Thorton, a highly skilled government operative trained to eliminate threats to national security. When a mission goes horribly wrong, Thorton is the only one with the information, skills, and contacts required to stop an impending international catastrophe. To do so, he will utilize the very government directive that the enemy sought to use to against him - Alpha Protocol.

Featuring a vividly realistic modern-day setting, Alpha Protocol gives players complete control not only of Thorton’s actions but his personality and attitude as well, all of which will determine the future of the world as we know it. Blending fast-paced modern combat, significant character advancement and innovative RPG features, Alpha Protocol brings a fresh new perspective to the genre.

Promising a “story rivaling the best spy-thriller novels and immersive, ultra-realistic espionage world”, Alpha Protocol sets out to “redefine the RPG genre for the next-gen gamer.”

The key features of Alpha Protocol include.

* A morally-complex branching story - The world is not black and white and the story will change based upon how you act in it. By replaying the game with different choices, you will have a very different narrative.

* Dialogue Stance System – The revolutionary new dialog systems allows full control of Thorton’s reactions through emotive controls. However, characters will not always react the same way. He will have to choose carefully in each dialog.

* A Modern Day Role Playing Experience with Action Gameplay – The new RPG system gives players the ability to mold Thorton into the secret agent they want him to become with lethal close-combat techniques, marksmanship abilities, proficiency with spy gadgets, and much more.

* Living, realistic international world that responds to Thorton - Thorton will travel across the globe, encountering mysterious contacts and deadly enemies multiple times over the course of Alpha Protocol’s plot. Depending on his previous interactions with a character or a location, the world’s reactions to him will change, opening new possibilities and gameplay avenues.

Alpha Protocol screens look sharp

Source: seganerds.com

Here are some nice looking screens for Sega and Obsidian’s upcoming video game, Alpha Protocol. This are the same screens that appeared in Game Informer’s April issue.

People on the forum have complained that the game looks generic. That’s a lame excuse to dismiss a game. I think the screens look nice and feature a nice amount of textures. To be honest, it has me interested, not because of the art design but because of what it promises.

We gave all you guys the details , now you will be able to read the 10 page exclusive for yourself. I have seen people knocking the character designs, so did I at first, but after seeing more screenshots of the game, I don’t mind it. It also says you can customize your agent. So it should be interesting.

The scans also include the ‘Top 10 weirdest games of all time’, like expected Sega dominated the list.

Sega, Obsidian officially announce Alpha Protocol

After we first told you about Sega’s upcoming espionage RPG, Alpha Protocol, a few days ago, the publisher sent us word confirming the title and how it and developer Obsidian plan to “redefine” the role playing genre.

“Sega is very excited to be introducing a new type of gaming experience to next-gen consumers,” said Sean Ratcliffe, vice president of marketing at Sega of America.“With ground-breaking new RPG action and an interactive storyline matching the best spy-thrillers, Alpha Protocol delivers a true next-generation RPG experience.”

Players take on the role of Michael Thorton, a special agent who has been banished by his government for perhaps knowing too much. With this information, it’s up to Agent Thorton to stop a possible international disaster. Throughout your travels, your actions and decisions will directly shape what kind of agent Thorton becomes and ultimately what happens to the fate of our planet.

Alpha Protocol blends Obsidian’s knack for intricate story, engrossing characters and significant character advancement with fast-paced modern combat,” said Feargus Urquhart, CEO of Obsidian Entertainment.“Alpha Protocol embraces everything we enjoy about making RPGs from a fresh perspective. We are confident our talented staff at Obsidian will enable us to deliver this exciting RPG experience.”

Sure, neither Sega or Obsidian really told exactly how it will redefine RPGs, but we know from Obsidian’s past work on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II and Neverwinter Nights 2 that we’ll have plenty of freedom to shape the world and our character. The game is set to release in early 2009 on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
