PlayStation 3’s online social network Home released today

PlayStation Home Screenshot of the Motorstorm environmentPlayStation Home, the long awaited online social networking service for PlayStation 3 users, will launch today, December 11th, in the United States and Europe.

The service has been a long time coming and was first announced at the Game Developers Conference 2007 by Phil Harrison and was supposed to launch that year but suffered several delays and setbacks. But now the service is officially ready to go.

Home will be available as a free download to all PlayStation 3 owners once they connect to the PlayStation Network. If you connect or are already connected the service will automatically download and install. Once that is done, you will see a new PlayStation Home logo in your CrossMedia Bar (XMB) menu.

The service lets users interact and chat with each other through a 3D space via avatars that they create to represent themselves. The looks is similar to The Sims and the avatars work much like the Wii’s Mii system but closer to the Xbox 360 avatars in that they look more realistic and like actual people.

When you are inside Home, you can walk around the various environments as your avatar and chat with others via both text and voice. There is a variety of activities you can do with others as well, including playing mini-games, watching videos (on actual TV screens), listening to music (on actual stereos), visiting clubs and more. Clubs are unique areas created by users with similar interests, where they can come and mingle about whatever subject. So expect there to be clubs for every anime under the sun, for example.

Home is highly customizable, everything from your avatars themselves to your own personal room, or apartment, that you can purchased directly from the PlayStation Store, to your clothes and furnishings for your place. As far clubhouses go, they will be available for anyone who wants to create a club, although you will have to pay a price. Sony did not say how much. They simply stated that “to be a Clubhouse owner, user will need to buy the entitlement to run the club.” So it sounds like it will be a small fee to simply set the club up.

You will also find “regional game-related content” in Home. These are areas that are set-up to advertise certain games. You will find areas, or “spaces” devoted to hit PlayStation 3 titles including Far Cry 2, Motorstorm 2: Pacific Rift, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, SOCOM, Resistance and Guitar Hero among many others that will eventually become available. Initially the Far Cry 2 space will only be available for European users but will be available in North American territories “soon” and it shouldn’t be too long before a whole bunch of them become available. Naturally, any company can use Home as a marketing tool by creating their own advertising space within Sony’s Home. Sony already has plans with Sony Pictures and Paramount Pictures which involve “dedicated spaces, sponsorship of in-world events, virtual items and exclusive media viewings in the PlayStation Home Theatre.”

The first movie-tie-in event will involve the upcoming film The Watchmen, which will have it’s own space with a selection of virtual Watchmen merchandise. You’ll even have the chance to virtually meet members of the film’s cast and crew in a Watchmen-themed environment in 2009.

The Watchmen promotion follows the previously announced sponsorships with fashion label Diesel and energy drink Red Bull. The latter will offer the opportunity to take part in a virtual version of the Red Bull Air Race, a stunt-flying championship around Red Bull Island. Ligne Roset will provide contemporary furniture, and users will be able to customize items before they buy them.

Riddick: Dark Athena debut trailer

The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is a game that will expand on the critically acclaimed original game in the series that released for the Xbox and PC in 2004 as The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay.

The new game not only brings the entire original to next-gen consoles with upgraded graphics, effects and audio, but an entirely new game that’s just as large as the original has been added in addition to numerous gameplay enhancements and features.

Starring Vin Diesel as the titular anti-hero Riddick (who has heightened sensory abilities that allow him to see and hear beyond normal human ranges), you must break out of the galaxy’s most deadly prison in this compelling 1st person action experience. Check out the all new trailer for the game.

Call of Duty: World at War starts Double XP Week

World at War on Xbox 360Activision has started “Double XP” Week for Call of Duty: World At War for those Xbox 360 and PC users who have the Limited Collector’s Edition.

Those who qualify will have the opportunity to earn double the experience points with access to the “Double XP Officer’s Club” playlists. It will end at 11:59AM Pacific Standard Time in the U.S. on Friday, December 12th. So you have the rest of today and all of tomorrow to rack up those points!

Call of Duty: World At War is the latest game in the first-person war series and the 5th game in the franchise. For this title the setting was brought back to World War II after the huge success of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare which was set in modern times. The game recieved great reviews across the board.

It is available on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC at a price point of $60, on the Wii for $50, the PS2 for $40 and the DS for $30. It’s rated M for Mature (Intense Violence, Strong Language, Blood and Gore).

Scribblenauts revealed for DS by 5th Cell

Scribblenaughts has been revealed by 5th Cell (who developed Drawn to Life and Lock’s Quest) exclusively for DS.

Scribblenaughts is an ambitious project whose premise has you writing words to solve puzzles (collecting “Starites”) on levels. The hook though is that you are supposedly able to write anything and what you write will come to life and be used in the game (the game will automatically know what to do with the object).

Examples in the trailer show the player writing “football”, and then having the football drop into the world and using the football to knock the Starite down from a tree. Alternatively you can write ladder and use the latter to reach the Starite. Or you can write beaver and the beaver will cut the tree down.

It’ll be really interesting to see how far they take this premise and if you can truly use any word. I imagine that there are limitations or words that the game won’t recognize.

NASCAR Kart Racing announced for Wii by EA

Electronic Arts has revealed NASCAR Kart Racing exclusively for Wii. Which, correct me if I’m wrong, is EA’s first entry in the “kart-racing” genre that was started by Mario Kart and joined by nearly every other mascot character in existence, from Crash Bandicoot to Sonic to LEGO to Bomberman to Konami characters. I’m surprised it took them so long!

NASCAR Kart Racing has been designed from the ground up for Wii and will allow players to “grab the steering wheel as a famed NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver and speed through treacherous landscapes, wind around rocky cliffs, jump rivers and dodge falling boulders.”



Multiplayer offers up to four-player head-to-head play via split-screen and lots of licensed, named drivers in addition to original characters created just for the game.

Real NASCAR drivers include: Jeff Burton, Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Carl Edwards, Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne, Matt Kenseth, Elliott Sadler, Tony Stewart.

New EA characters include: Billy Backfire, Bobby Backfire, Kelly Kates, Linda Leadbetter, Maurice L’Eclair, “Shakes” McDaniel, “Thriller” Tadwell, Monica Torres, Luke Trigger, Terri Windsome.

Like all cart racers, you can collect power-ups as you race along the tracks either solo or with a teammate. Power-Ups include: Boomstick, Gas Can, Oil Slick, Bottle Rocket, Shockwave, Free Pass, Yellow Flag, Ad. Nothing out of the ordinary there, as the power-ups do what you’d expect. The Bottle Rocket seeks someone out like a Red Shell from Mario Kart, the ad covers an opponents screen so they can’t see, the shockwave spins out drivers near you, the Yellow Flag gives you a speed boost to the front of the pack, etc. No word yet on whether or not the game supports the “Wii Racing Wheel” but I’d imagine that it will.

NASCAR Kart Racing has a release date of February in the U.S. for the Wii. It does not yet have a release date for Europe.

Check out the trailer above to see the game in action. Looks pretty much like a standard cart racing game to me . . . does anyone else spot anything unique about this? Either way though, cart racers ARE fun and this game looks like it could be a fun, multiplayer racing game just like every cart racer is.

PlayStation Home is a ground-breaking 3D social gaming community available on PS3 that allows users to interact, communicate and share gaming experiences. Dragon Quest X announced for Wii by series creator

Square-Enix and Nintendo announce Dragon Quest X for Wii
Dragon Quest X, the 10th entry in the extremely popular RPG series, has been revealed for Wii by series creator Yuji Horii at a Square Enix press conference. No other details were given on the game including a release date, price, or any details on gameplay, storyline or characters.

This is not a huge surprise considering that the latest game in the franchise, the yet-to-be-released Dragon Quest IX, is an exclusive to Nintendo’s DS handheld. So it would only seem natural that the company would graduate to Nintendo’s Wii system.

Journey of the Cursed King for PS2Since Dragon Quest X will be on the Wii, it will be the first current-gen entry in the franchise and the latest console release. Dragon Quest VIII was the previous console game in the series, and was released on the PS2 in 2005 in the U.S. and was the first title in the series to be released outside of Japan with the “Dragon Quest” name instead of “Dragon Warrior”, as it was previously called outside of Japan.

Square Enix also saw fit to reveal the Japanese release date for the DS Dragon Quest IX game at the press conference. Dragon Quest IX will be released in Japan on March 28th for 5,980 yen.

Gears of War 2 hits 3 million sold in its first month worldwide

Gears of War 2 for Xbox 360Gears of War 2 has hit an astounding 3 million units sold, a major milestone, in it’s first month on store shelves. Just for comparison’s sake, the original Gears of War that released for the Xbox 360 in November of 2006 took ten weeks to reach 3 million units sold. And Gears 2 did it in four.

This was confirmed by Edge who spoke with Epic Games Vice President Mark Rein via an e-mail where he stated that “Microsoft [the game’s publisher] confirmed to me this afternoon that Gears of War 2 sell-through surpassed 3 million units as of last week.”

To date the original Gears of War has sold close to five million copies.

As for the sequel, Gears of War 2 has consistently been one of the top played Xbox Live games online since it’s release on November 7th.

Street Fighter Special Collectors Edition announced for Xbox 360 and PS3

Pre-Order Street Fighter IV on PS3Capcom has announced the Special Collector’s Edition version of Street Fighter IV for Xbox 360 and PS3. It will release alongside the normal game on February 20, 2009, although it’s so far only been announced for Europe.

Along with the game itself, everything from the Special Collector’s Edition is snugly housed in a classic Street Fighter scene outer case!

The Street Fighter IV – Special Collector’s Edition includes:

* Limited edition figurines of all time favorite character Ryu and the all new character Crimson Viper, positioned within the familiar settings of the ‘crowded Chinese downtown’.
* A bonus disc containing a feature length HD quality anime movie, created specially for the launch of Street Fighter IV and a selection of the best game trailers to date.
* A mini strategy guide created in the style of a comic art book detailing the moves and biographies of four of the new characters to the series; Viper, Abel, El Fuerte and Rufus

Gamers in the United States will not get both character figurines at the same time as in Europe. Rather, the Xbox 360 version will come with the Crimson Viper figurine (as well as the anime on DVD disc) and PS3 gamers will get the Ryu figurine (with the anime on Blu-ray disc).

Additionally, you can pre-order the game to snag a replica of Ryu’s headband.
